Okay, I read through the other plowing thread and it mentioned setting up the plow. I'm a complete beginner with a plow...This is a single bottom plow the FIL gave me. It's got a sharp disc, then the curved part of the plow (see, I don't even know basic plow terminology). This part is maybe 12 inches high. There's also a steel wheel about 2" wide behind the curved part, looks like this must control the depth the plow will go.

I played with the toplink a little and got the plow to cut about 2 inches deep, enough to lift the sod and roll it over, but that's about it. This is on hard Tennessee ground that's probably never seen a plow. Sometimes it tries to go deeper but it stops the tractor cold (Ford 1100, 2WD, got rear wheel weights but only turf tires).

How do I set up a plow? What's the basic parts of a plow? Do I need to ditch the turf tires and go for ags, plus adding more weight (tires aren't loaded)?

Thanks, as you can tell I ain't no farmer...yet.

Well, my Dad loved plowing far too much to ever teach me how to set up the plow, but maybe I can help a little. I would drive the "high" side of the tractor (when viewed as it would be when plowing) up on to something 4"-6" high so you can stand behind the tractor, and see what is going with the plow as it would be in the furrow. Next, I guess I might adjust the plow on it's frame so that the outside of the "furrow" we are creating here is even with the inside of the back tire. I would then make other adjustments as required so that the plow was sitting flat on the ground, and tracking parallel with the tires of the tractor. Then I would set that depth wheel so that it was about 5"-6" above the ground, and give it a try. We can both learn the names for all these parts after we are having some fun using them.......... :D :D

if you are turning sod and the ground is hard you may not have enough pull to get your plow any deeper. have you tried to make 2 passes, the first one to roll the sod over and the next to turn the soil?
