This spring we are going to plow four acres of land. We are using a Farmall M tractor, with a #8 little genus two bottom 14" plow. Neither of us ever paid attention to plowing or plowed, never seen a little plow used . In case we can't find an old timer to give advice, where do we start? Once we figure the plowing out, what equipment do we use to finish it off so we can plant?

Once you get going it will make scence. Remember the soil rolls right. After plowing you wil need to disk and harrow than seed. Google how to plow a field diagram. It speeks for itself. I like to plow in sections. I start at the outside of the section working in so that I only end up with one dead furrow not two.

I would suggest you plow now to give the grass the winter to rot and allow the freezing and thawing cycle the the chance to break up the clods. If the area you plan to plow has long grass on it it helps if you mow it first.

The simple lesson on plowing is to adjust your plow to create a starter furrow going one way across the field then readjust to come back the other way beside the first furrow. That gives you two starter furrows and allows you to plow back and forth. Then set your wheels in the starter furrow and begin plowing stopping periodically to adjust plow positioning, to ensure coulters cut the sod and the sod flips over neatly. Once that is done it is simply a matter of going back and forth at a speed that flips the sod nicely.

Most plows roll the soil best at 3-5mph.

Botabill, Thanks, but I can't plow now because I just dragged the plow out of the woods a couple of weeks ago. After drinking many beers looking at it and figuring what everything does it is in pretty good shape. I have to find some coulters for it, and new tires and she could plow. This winter I'm going to paint it up.
