So, my dad wants to start planting corn, and really get into the Ag business, corn mainly (Any pointers?!). So he dug up this old plow that came with the farm and hooked it up to our big John Deere and tore it to shreds. I'm talking about the plow, not the field.
The plow has two blades, and an adjuster for something. I'm very new to this realm of farming so I have a lot of questions.
First, we remachined a lot of the plow after turning the third arm connector into mush. It totally bent almost 45+ degrees, with the third arm from the tractor attached. We had to torch a lot of stuff off. It being rusty didn't help. We welded it up and strapped some more metal on there, but same story, the third arm just bent like it was 1/8 metal, not 5/8. Do 2 blade plows have some kind of wheel on the back er something? We feel like something is missing. I could post pics if that helps.
Thanks!

Yeah,picture would help.

Musta been either plowing in tough big rocky stuff/roots,etc,maybe plow was to deep, maybe plow is just to light for your tractor, maybe going to fast, hit something big,who knows, right.

Well post a few pictures of the plow and the plow hooked up to tractor and a couple of pictures of the ground you've already plowed, and ask more specific questions and you'll be swarmed with help I bet.

Hay Pirate, agree with all said so far.
Just wondering if you are this new to farming crops how much corn are you planning on planting. Also what kind? If I were new to crops, corn would be a crop I really would want to talk with local grower/supply stores on to get a good firm idea on cost. If you are raising field corn you need to find a combine person who you can depend on and find out the width of rows he uses and plant to match his combine. If he gives you more than one options go with the one HE PLANTS as that will be the header he cares the most about. Regardless of the type of corn or the amount you will be planting corn is a big corn when it comes to harvesting it.

That aside: following suggestion on pictures, make a list of the equipment you have and more on your plans with the corn. You will need planters and sprayer unless you are hiring those out. Again if so know row width.

Have you done soil test? Really need to but if not locals have a good idea of standards there for lime and or fertilizer needed. Realize some real differences in planting dates between here and there but our field corn is about 1 1/2 to 2 feet tall. Corn seed probably has been sold out for at least two months.

Have fun! Turning dirt and growing a crop even with the problems is a taste of heaven!
