Plowing Pipe in Pictures

On poly pipe, each connection (tees or elbows or each connection) are inside the working diameter of the pipe. To get the same flow and pressures from poly pipe, you need to use bigger size than you do with PVC. I need to quit being so lazy and get my sprinkler system designed and get the pipe in... no reason to delay it (other than finding time).
For sprinklers you can use saddle tees, and there is no obstruction of flow whatsoever. Moreover, you can put saddle tees in/on in a tenth the time of a tee fitting.

Note that NEC is 18" deep to top of NM conduit, or 24" when direct buried. Hence if you are going DB I believe you are looking at 24".

That said, you can't pull DB wire with a plow, it has to be trenched in. And if you are opening a trench, I'd advise you put schedule 40 non-metallic conduit in the hole, and then pull wire through it. The added cost is minimal, you don't have to dig as deep, it affords more protection, and if anything ever happens you can just pull a new line through the conduit.

(Sorry to take this off topic, but this will help me.)

Wrooster, appreciate the info. We'll open a trench, and go minimum 24" if direct burial or 18" if conduit but I still have this question about putting bundled cable in conduit. This is 8/4 not separate stranded wire of 4 - 8's. (We only need 8/3 but my brother in law ordered from a guy on ebay and he sent 8/4).

We are building a 16'x12' guest house on our cabin property about 200' from the cabin. It is only a bedroom, no kitchen, no bathroom. Just lights, plugs and one 220 volt electric heater. We're going to install a sub-panel in it and wire it from there.

So, can we put this in a conduit? I highly doubt we'll want to upgrade it later because we are over doing it now with #8 wire but it sounds like a good idea to put it in conduit.

As I stated in a previous post, one of the guys at our deer camp is an electrical contractor and he said NEC prohibits bundled cable like this to be in conduit. It is direct bury rated wire.

Thanks.

Well it's a good thing he did! :)

A feeder to a subpanel in a detached building requires 4 conductors -- L1, L2, N, and GND.

Multi-conductor cable can be installed in underground conduit provided the cable is properly derated for the conduit diameter. You will need to consult the NEC, you local AHJ, and/or the cable manufacturer's datasheet to find out the details -- it is locality-, insulation- and cable construction-dependent.

200' from the nearest bathroom, that should keep overnight company at a minimum !!! MikeD74t

Good point MikeD74t, but there are a lot of trees and it's pretty dark.;)

Thanx for the post gabby and interjects from wrooster and others. If it already is not apparent, I am ignorant A-#1 when it comes to tractors. Were learnin' here... This "pipe plowing" is very exciting to me as I am a plumbing contractor. I remember a job I bid years ago to do what you posted in this thread with 20 times more pipe. No wonder I lost the bid... I was going to dig it. My lil BX25 might be a lil small, but eventually I will give this a go. Perhaps several 'dry" runs down to depth first.

Last week I bought a ripper shank on Ebay to build a subsoiler, it was not delivered on the 16th USPS. I looked up tracking, they said it was at local post office, no explaniation. I went down there and I was told my postal truck was burgerlized, on the day my shank was to be delivered...sigh.

I agree poly -butalene? (I thunk) black pipe is a poor excuse for piping. Here in So Calif some time ago there were massive failures of the stuff. If I do encounter it, it is an automatic replace, we won't take that liability of trying to fix it, but what about PolyEthelene pipe w/ socket fusion, or better for pipe plowing butt fusion? I use it for gas but for non potable, heck, maybe potable, it might be the awnser? It is in a roll and I suspect it will outlive my childrens grandchildreds, great grandchilden.

"tiling" What is the word tile for? Here is a tiling TRAIN, WOW!

On our farm we have plowed in lots of direct burial wire with the D6 cat. The wire is fed in on the ripper side so that it isn't dragging through the soil. We have a couple foot long piece of pipe with a gradual 90 degree bend. There are two eyes welded to the back of the ripper shank so when it is time to plow wire this pipe us installed into the eyes with the bend pointing backwards just above the bottom of the ripper. Works great for installing corral lighting and wiring to the cattle waterers.
