I just read the "stuck in the snow thread" and I posted a pic of my tractor stuck. I was wondering if plowing with the backhoe on would help or hurt. With the backhoe mounted the rear wheels would have a lot of weight. I am thinking that this would take a lot of weight off the front wheels and the control would not be very good. Without the backhoe, the front wheels seem pretty effective with the blade angled. The backhoe would also help if the tractor is stuck. Any ideas?

Go for it. That's approx 700 lbs of go forward weight. You could always take the front blade off and go with fel and hoe for the deep stuff.

Don't forget about the diff lock, it works pretty well. I think that we've had 2 3" snows here this year and cabin fever is building! :(

The extra weight will help. Also when stuck, it's nice to be able to reach out with the bucket and either push or pull your way out of trouble.

I was digging a pond with a case 680e and got stuck. That's about 17000 pounds of steel. I had two tractor chained to it and couldn't budge it. I thought I was going to need to have a friend with a crawler pull me out. I eventually worked my way out using the hoe bucket and loader bucket.

On my BX22, I found that using the loader with the backhoe on in the snow worked for traction, but didn't do anything for steering as the OP suggested. My best results ( I had loaded bar tires) were with the hoe off. Another member found his best results with a partially loaded weight box, to both aid traction, and retain steering control.

I have actually tried this with 6" of snow. While it did not spin as easily I lost alot of maneuverability. The front would push instead of steering and the over hang of the hoe cutting down on turning clearance. I have filled the rear tires and have no issues now.

We've always kept the hoe's on. On the town highway and state hwy machines we added chains to the fronts only.

I know when the backhoe is on with no front attachment, teh bx23 is uncontrollable when heading even a little uphill. The front tires come up off the ground very easliy.
I like the idea of filling the tires, I hadn't thought about that. That would sure add some weight right where you need it. Is there any downside to that? I was thinking of mowing with the tractor in summer, would the liquid need to come out?

*I take this to mean no Fel or front blade or anything else at all. Is that Correct?
**What did you expect without any weight on the front end?
***Yeah it means you have to keep taking attachments off to mow and putting them back on to use.
If you're going to be lugging the extra weight around all the time anyway then why not put weight on it that prevents having to keep switching implements rather than weight that creates the game of musical attachments?
