Pls explain how some HST\'s don\'t have clutch

This is my second newbie question.

If hydrostatic transmission can be without clutch, why some HST's have clutch? What's the advantage of clutch?

Re: Pls explain how some HST\'s don\'t have clutch

To engage the PTO and shift between the HST gear ranges. That's when I use the clutch on my HST machine. If a guy had only one gear and a PTO that utilized some sort of electronic solenoid engagement then a clutch may not be needed.

Re: Pls explain how some HST\'s don\'t have clutch

I am studying my tractor manual. I don't see a clutch. It has 3 HST ranges (selected by a lever).

My New Holland is hydro and the onlly reason I need the clutch is for the PTO. I don't need it to from low, to mid to high range.

Re: Pls explain how some HST\'s don\'t have clutch

My HST has 2 ranges and no clutch. The PTO is engaged by a solenoid. Think some manufacturers put a clutch on the PTO to enable more gentle engagement and more sure disengagement between the HST ranges (they don't trust the HST pedals to always zero out; I guess).

My HST has a clutch. I only use it for slowly engaging the PTO. I don't need it for starting or switching between 3 ranges.

Re: Pls explain how some HST\'s don\'t have clutch

My Deere doesn't have a clutch, but has three speed ranges. Just need to have the rear gears stopped (as in 'not moving the wheels') to change to High, Med. or Low.

A clutch is redundant, IMO.

The PTO has it's own clutch, and can be engaged slowly. No foot clutch tho.

Re: Pls explain how some HST\'s don\'t have clutch

All has to do with design, and utilization of standard trans. components such as clutch disc, pressure plate, input shafts. My Kubota L3010 has such a set up.When pushing in the clutch, the hst, rearPTO are all disabled.I like this feature because when using rear implements such as PHD,rear mowers, chippers, anything that takes lots of power to overcome inertia a clutch is nice. My previous tractor only had a dash mounted switch for rear PTO,I did not like the instant on especially with a PHD.

Re: Pls explain how some HST\'s don\'t have clutch

My little Orange had a clutch for the PTO that I really miss on my new JD, especially when the rototiller grabbed a rock. The PTO lever has a built-in clutch but the lever LOCKS the PTO shaft when it is dissengaged. Jerk the lever to neutral and it STOPS! Not great when you want to slowly engage the brush hog or snowblower.

Good God! Are you serious? What happens when you are using a brush cutter? There is a LOT of rotating mass, I can't imagine it surviving that for long....
