Even though the spec on the point gap on the Kohler engine on the Gravely, I recall that I had to set it closer (about 0.016") to get the points to close. Determined this with a light to tell when juice was on or off. With a bigger gap, the juice never got turned on to charge the condenser.
On any "pointed" system, try to find an electronic substitute. I had to do this on an Alfa 1300 cc engine. It kept burning the points up because they didn't align properly. I finally put a Hall electronic system on it.
