Poison Ivy is no fun - how about chiggers?

Great question, Prokop! Although I seem to be developing some immunity to them, every time I hit the farm ponds in northeast MO (where my wife's from) I get nailed!! I'm taking notes!

Before the first time I did some fishing back there, I'd never heard of chiggers! (Guess thay can't take our NH winters....:laughing

If i know i am going to be exposed to them, Say bus hogging,or working in tall grass, I put Avon "skin-so-soft" on
If I get them i mix a small amount of Clorox with water an mop it on the area they are, this will dry up an stop the itch, an kill the little bastards.Only mix a small amount or youll burn your skin.Seems like every year I get a doce of them.
I would take posen ivey any day.

We use one of the Benydryl type of anti itch gels. The stuff will cover a lot of skin with a little bit of gel. Which is what you need with Chiggers. I think the brand we are using at the moment in Calamine.

The gel helps. The chiggers don't bother me as much as they used too. In the past I would take Benydryl to help the itching as well.

Other than those two things they only other thing that works is to scratch them.

I have tried all sorts of "treatments" and only the above has worked for us.

I somehow got some Chiggers last weekend. I was sitting in what we call the barn working on the DR. Then I put on the rotary cutter and bucket on the FEL. Checked the slip clutch and mowed. I did not go into any place the chiggers should go but they got me. AND was wearing long pants tucked in the socks all DEETED up. The only thing I can figure is the chiggers climbed on the tractor when mowing, found me, and had lunch.

I've found that Deet doesn't repel them. However treating my pants and socks with permethrin does the job. This is a natural insecticide, so it kills them as they pass through the cloth of your clothes. Don't put this directly on your skin. This is what the military uses, by the way. Lasts through a number of washings.

Agreed. I thought after this winter with really hard lengthy freezes that maybe the ticks and chiggers would be reduced this year.

DEET has worked for me for years. Permethrin does work better in that it kills that little b.......ds. :thumbsup: I have some of the Sawyer product but I just have not gotten around to soaking the clothes. I FINALLY found Permethrin at the Farm Star. I did not need it so that is why I found it.

Permethrin is better than DEET since the treatment does last quite a few washings and KILLS the buggers.

This only works so much in my area.

I got some chiggers 3-4 weeks back when I walked to the wood pile to check the tarps. No grass. No brush.

The Devil Spawn still got me.....

I do have something that might work to remove chiggers and ticks. Need to post the info. And no it is not Napalm.

Glad the Deet works for you. The little devils here treat it like a condiment. The Sawyer stuff is expensive - you can just buy fly spray at a farm supply and dilute it to the same strength - less than 1%, as I recall.

but I've had chiggers, poison ivy and poison oak. Poision oak is the worst by far!

Poison oak, ivy, and sumac are all the same....
