We have already had a bad year here. They started coming out about 4 weeks ago. My in laws live next door. The FiL has had to use the boom stick on 8 rattlers so far this year.

Broom Stick? He is braver than me!!

Its kinda hard to tell from pic but my guess would be a "Diamondback water snake"(non-venenous I believe).
Not to be confused with a "Diamondback rattler".

 And they also have a nasty disposition!!

Someone once told me that rattlers are evolving to not rattle anymore due to hogs getting them.

Urban legend?

I have heard that too and don't buy it, the "educated" snakes probably got eaten so.....

TripleR - that is a fantastic link. Thanks.

It's really been helpful to us as we have woods, ponds, ditches and don't want to harm ny non-poisonous snake and then only if they present a danger close to our homes.

I used to eat a lot of them as a kid in the summer. Soak the legs in salt water in the refrigerator for a few hours after skinning and cutting off the feet.. Roll them in flour and a little pepper if you like , and fry "just like chicken" They are actually pretty tasty.

By the way, I don't think any of the snakes shown are poisonous. However some shown are venomous. You can eat any venomous snake you like and they will not poison you! Just don't let them bite you!
