Polar Vortex Preparations

C'mon man, the rest of us were just trying to feel good about him doing a good deed and helping others in this cold, unforgiving modern life we all share.

Surely some of those parents are irresponsible with their personal choices, but it's not a majority of them. 75% smoke? no way. Some people just aren't very intelligent, or given much resources, and expecting them to be able to shrewdly navigate life, get a great job and save lots of money is unrealistic. Other people just get dealt a bad hand in life, and accidents happen. Addictions are a real problem too. Have some compassion.

MossRoad, kudos to you and your wife. Don't feel at all bad about eating out after packing the lunches, you deserve it, and hey, some of their parents probably work at that restaurant, which needs the business.

I was clear to the bottom of your second paragraph becore I realized you might not be joking. Still not positive though... :)

Having a great job and saving lots of money isn't what we are talking about. We're talking about the logical efficiency of breeding humans. A handout won't fix that. It will create an addiction.

It's sad that the kids pay the price in their parent's vagrant ignorance of their responsibility. We created that.

This Country has an excellent support network in place. This includes Food Banks. Now if we could just create an equal system to hold the parents accountable.

And 99% of those parents have an expensive cell phone. 75% of those parents spend their food money on pop and frozen pizzas. 75% smoke. 50% don't have a steady job. 25% drive a car beyond their means.

I applaud your involvement. But it's not the solution.

OK while we figure out a solution, we'll not let the kids starve due to the sins of their parents. ;)

Cell phones are cheap. They are cheaper than the land lines that the government was paying for before cell phones were invented. Therefore, it's a better use of taxpayer dollars to give out cell phones VS land lines.

There aren't many grocery stores in bad neighborhoods. The only place to get food is convenience stores at gas stations.

75% of people living below the poverty level don't smoke. 25% do.

The unemployment rate in this county is 3.3%. The work is steady. The pay is low.

Most of the cars I see at the food bank are in pretty bad shape.

Then by all means we should continue down this slope.

On the cellphone issue... I don't call $1200 cheap.
In a year, they need the *NEW* one. Thats $100/Mo BEFORE service charges & taxes.
My land line NEVER cost me that much.

So, was it as cold as they forecast?

How accurate were local forecasts?

Ours was pretty close. The debate was if we would break the 1890 record of -22F. We did not, we only got to -20, so I guess they were off by 11%, so maybe not so accurate?

- If they don't send them to school, they won't eat today.
- If they do send them to school in the cold weather, they'll get frostbite waiting for the bus.

Had to go up to Louisville yesterday and came back today. Been hearing the school principle on the local radio stations around hear letting folks know if they need food to contact the school in a PM on FB or phone call. No names will be record and the teachers will bring the food out no questions asked

Yep, we missed the all-time low by 2 degrees, but we smashed the record low for this day in history. Past was -11F, so we beat that by 9.

I guess we should be happy with that!

We pay $35/mo all in for my wife痴 cell plan. Includes more data than she ever uses. Not sure where $100/mo comes in....
