My apologies for not making it clear that this didn't just happen. I've kind of been away from this website for several years and just started reading it again. I posted this because the design hasn't changed hence the potential still exists for this to happen to someone else. Re: the amount of water issue - The ranger doesn't use an oil pan on the bottom of the engine. It uses a plastic container in a vertical position next to the engine. A rubber hose comes out of the bottom the reservoir and connects to the engine so a small amount of water settling to the bottom of the reservoir and entering the small diameter rubber hose will occlude all oil flow. Certainly a fluke and there had to be enough water AND that night had to get cold enough in my garage for the water to freeze (which only happend when it gets down around 10 F or so. Doesn't happen often but once was enough!) I was just putting this out there as an awareness issue so if someone else has one in a cold climate they can check once in awhile for water build up.

Interesting.....

I haven't looked at one, but I understand what you are saying about the design where ice can choke off the oil supply. This is not just a snowmobile engine since most are two-stroke and rely on cold air to run. But Polaris engineers live and breathe cold air six months of the year up in northern Minnesota so they SHOULD understand and anticipate cold weather issues including condensation.

I had the exact thing happen to my Polaris ATV and it only had 50 hours on it but was one month over the warranty period. They wouldn't even sell me the parts at cost, so I bought a used engine off ebay. No more Polaris' for me. When I was looking at a side-by-side, I just went with Kubota 900 and love it.
