not needing the power and 4wd; we bought 3 trailboss 330. absolutely love them. Climbs any hill we need to go up and the "no shift" transmission works well with the autistic son and clutchless wife. For me, havine all 3 use the same filters/oils/tires is a godsend..

I bought a used 500 sportsman HO about 3 years ago and use it almost daily on the farm. I have skidded logs, hauled deer, built fence. spot sprayed brush, and last but not least winched the Cub Cadet out of the edge of the swamp several times. In the spring I have several wet spots that I mow and it is easy to get the cub stuck. The Polaris is a lot easier to maneuver arount to pull it out with. Two winters ago I put a snow blade on the Polaris to keep drives and paths open in the winter. I have even cleared the pond off for skating and ice fishing with it. In short I don't know how I ever lived without it. Every mile I put on it is a mile I didn't have to walk carrying something. The okder I get the steepeer these hills get. Enjoy them the uses are endless.

I would love to try one of the Polaris CVT ATVs....esp either the Trailboss
330 2WD, like you have, or the Phoenix 200.

I have recently sold 3 of our 4 ATVs, and really want a full automatic. What
a lot of folks may not realize is that for just carrying one person around
(no trailer, no logging, etc.), smaller, air-cooled 2WD units may be more
useful than 700 pound gas-hogs with 4x4 and longer-warmup water cooling.

There IS a place for the larger 4x4 units, and I am keeping my Honda
FourTrax 300.

RE the Polaris PVT, have you had to replace the drive belt periodically?

dfkrug,

If you know when to use low and hi range, you may never change a belt. I know of one 500HO that has been plowing snow for 8 years on the original belt. I know of atleast one other with the original belt.

Basically, the clutches engage at 1200-1400 rpm, and Polaris states you need to be a minimum of 300rpm above that.

3-7mph, towing or plowing, low range.
Above that hi range.

I like my Sportsman a lot. I use it mostly for farm work anymore. I have done a lot of heavy pulling and farm work with it. Sometimes I think about trading it in on an UTV. But I like it so well I doubt that's probably ever going to happen. It fills a gap in on the farm that suits me better than an UTV. The choice between an ATV and UTV is owner preference. It's what we like to use best. Not pushing one over the other.

I just replaced my belt for the first time in my 2000 500 Sportsman because of the info stated above about HI and LOW. I beat the snot out of that atv and it always keeps coming back for more. I have replaced a few CV boots, done very regular fluid and filter changes and one complete brake pad change. The engine braking is so effective I seldom use the brakes unless we are riding the rocks or the mountains by my camp. I also have the Honda Rincon, which has some advantages, but it is a heck of a lot more finicky that the Polaris.

As far as the guy who said a small atv is better suited. I get at least 120 miles out of a tank when riding with the club, and that is riding at speeds a lot higher than I run when alone. We have a few gear heads who like to rip through the woods instead of enjoying them, which is fine from time to time. We always have several sections of mud fun on our rides as well, so I am not sure what kind machine he has experience with. My Honda also gets in excess of 100 miles per tank. How much more efficient are you going to get than that?

Sportsman's are nice. And they are expensive. I had to save up quite a while to afford one I have. I have had it 7 years now and I don't regret a single cent that I paid for it.

Here is one of the spots we ride, me on my Rincon. It gets deeper from here. We really do beat the heck out of the atv. I would never buy new, got both of mine a year old around November and saved a ton of dough. One had 200 miles on it and the Honda less than 100.
