MRCaptain bob.
I'm having trouble getting a mental picture of what you are describing .Call it brain fade . Had a fun day sorting out a building some Wood buthchers started, then realized they were way over their heads /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Is it a single 2x 6 or 8 , spliced into the top of the columns ? If it is it sounds like a method WICK uses on the gable ends . When I first saw one I thought it was lame . But it sure beats picking up and setting a 6x6 or 6x8 column that is 10 or 12 feet longer /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Wick does things a bit different than most . A lot of their stuff uses 6x8 columns as opposed to 6x6 . And the seem to like using 2x6 wall girts . Their headers are usually super heavy duty and SO much fun to put up . especially on buldings that are 18' under /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
BTW I'm in no way connected to Wick , But they do some pretty heavy duty buildings . All the best, John

mikell ,
Pea gravel is a good idea around post . But for the most part we don't use it. Reason? Most of the ground we work in here is Heavy clay . It doesn't allow water to perk out of the holes . So back filling a hole with gravel lets the water just sit around the post . It takes forever to perk away . So, we back fill with the soil from the site . We compact it to try and avoid water problems . Make sense ? All the best, John

When all else fails, call your best friend. Between the two of you, I am sure your project will be completed.

The four walls from grade level to eve height are studs on 2' cntr's and have the 2" of the 2x4 the normal way, that is set up so the outer barn facing would be nailed to that 2" face. From the eve's up (at the gable ends), it appears there are 2x6's on 4' centers with the 6" face to the outside so that outer barn facing is nailed to that. It's a very flexible wall. Had I been building it, I'd have 2x4's on the 2' cntrs just like below. But then, it probably wouldn't have lasted as long. I'm really interested in understanding the 'why' of this fashion of construction.

Hey Birdbath, the way this project is looking I will need more than one best friend, but...the truth is that the way I see it, if a person really is fortunate enough to have even only one true best friend, he is blessed, and I feel extremely fortunate to be able to say I do have such a friend in my life. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Slippy,

Bring your best friend and rent a rough terrain scissor lift. I rented one at the end of my pole barn project. It was a JLG25 I think. Up to 25’ working height, 4x8 extendable work platform, 4wd, with rough terrain tires. Kicked myself ten times all over for not renting it sooner. It would of made putting up the trusses and the roof a breeze.

This is the most important tool, I forgot to mention that earlier, Doooooh.

Ahh...thank you. Another great suggestion. I may have a little bit of a problem locating one in my area, but well worth checking out.

I rented mine from United Rentals. They specialize in construction equipment. I think they are everywhere, at least in Ohio. $300 for a Saturday, which they told me was for the weekend and they didn't care if I used it Sunday to. But they left here for over a month. To be honest I found lot's of uses for it. I think they forgot about it. I had to call them to remind them that it was here.

United Rentals

They're all over OH. Have fun w/ it.

Mrcaptbob '
We do our girts with the long dimension of the 2x4 or 2x6 nailed to the column . 2ft centers .
Steve , Your suggestion about an all terrain scissor lift is dead right. We use the old ladder and Pick method /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
The only time I've gotten the boss to go for the lift was when I took a fall from 20 ft onto concrete last year . One of the ladders gave way /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Told the boss I wasn't going back up there again . Took a while to get around again /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif the worst part was all the screws I had in my tool belt manage to perforate my body in a bunch of places ! Thought I'd never stop leaking.
Slippy, You are right . If you have ONE good freind you are truly Blessed . But when you get started try to get a couple more people.... Even if they are in laws /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
So far I've helped 5 others with things like building a couple of garages to re roofing a few houses . Might be interesting to find out if I'll have help when it comes time for my pole garage /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif ( yea , I've not yet built my own ! seems like what with work and finishing up my new house there just hasn't been the time . ) all the best ,John

Slippy, Btw where in Ohio are you? I'm just about 25 miles east of the Ohio border . (Rt422 )
If You're under 100 miles( i'll be glad to go a bit more ) I'll be glad to lend a hand . I'm sure that if I ask ,I can bring the winco gen and gas powered compressor .
One provision... I ain't doing lay out or digging holes /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Other than that, I'd be glad to help .
Heck, maybe some others on this site will do the same .... Kinda like the OLD days of Barn raising ! we might not be freinds (at first ) but we sure as heck might be neighbors .
All the best John
BTW the end of March is out.. Got to go down and visit my daughter . Other than that.... I'd love to give you a hand . There's just something about seeing a structure go up that's heart warming .
John
