I'm planning on building a pole barn sometime in the future and need some insite. I would like to have 20' ceilings. How deep does the post need to be planted in order for them to be stable enough and not cause any problems? This is the only field I seen to be lacking in. Thanks

There are lots of books available on pole barns in most libraries - I would recommend that you check one of them out. You should also call your town hall and ask them what the local requirements are.

In most cases, the poles must be in holes that are at least 42-48 inches deep.

Depth and size of poles depends on where you are located, load on the roof and many factors. If you will have heavy wind loads or snow loads you will want bigger poles and at least 48 inches deep. Also depending on the type of soil you are putting poles in you might want to put 6 inch concrete footers under the poles to keep them from sinking. Lot of things to think about building a pole barn. I have built many. One place to get cheap pole barn plans is: Storage building plans for pole barns, barn and sheds I purchased a set of pole barn plans for a 32X40 pole barn for 12.95. Hope this post helps you some.

With a 20 foot ceiling you are in a modified Pole that has a Concrete pier in the ground. The pole then can be up sized for the strenght.

No one can give you an accurate suggestion without knowing where the building will be built in addition to size, soil and sub-soil conditions. I don't know where everyone got their figures but to use them could be dangerous as well as illegal in you state, county or local jurisdiction. Your best bet is seek information from someone in your area that knows the codes and general soil conditions. Site specific conditions will still have to be verified as they can very from one post to the next.

Is this right or is it a typo?

I really can't understand the reason for such a tall ceiling. Is this the peak? or the height of the walls?

When you build beyond standard demensions, you add tremendous expense to the building. 16ft posts are pretty standard and as such, are your cheapest way to go. Put those in the ground 4ft and you will have 12 ft walls.

Even more important is what type of roof you will have and the span you will cover. Walls are easy, it's the roof that matters.
