pole barn floor joist hangers

I'm planning on building a 30 x 40 pole barn. I'm going with a Gambrel roof. I was going to uses 2"x6"x 10's for the floor joists.
My quandry is whether or notthe floor joist brackets support the floor?
I'm not planning to store alot of things upstairs. Main use will be an office for my wifes antique business and storing 20 or 30 bales of hay for the horses.

I have a 30X40 pole building with a gambrel roof. Floor joists are 2X10's & sit on top of 2X10's that are across the poles. There are two center posts in the building also. So, I guess what I'm saying is that they used 2X10X16 & didn't use joist hangers. IMO 2X6 is not strong enough & joist hangers aren't either. Also I don't understand the 10' length of the 2X6's.

The size for floor timbers are based on several factors. Loaded weight per square foot and span carried by the timber.

As you are planning on putting your wife and her business up on that upper level, the question really is how much do you like your wife? /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Depending on that answer, you might want to span the entire the entire 30' width with 2x10's on 24" centers. On the other hand, if she is a good cook, you might want to place a call to the local building inspector and ask him what the code is for your area.

There are other tables for heavier loads, etc. To me it looks like a 10' span with 2x6's is risky. 2x8's spaced 16" on center look more appropriate. Joist hangers don't really do much for the calculation (except if you don't use them and just toe-nail the joists in, all bets are off).

The floor may be plenty strong enough but it may not be comfortable walking on it! Deflection, that note in the table that 1/360 of the length is what limits the spans most of the time.

The 10' length came from having 4 posts spanning the 30' width 10' on centers . . . . .

I'd want 2x8s on 16" centers or 2x10s on 24" centers. 2x6s make pretty fair rafers.

I agree with 2x8 @ 16" o.c. for a 10' span.
