A couple questions for you:

1. Is the Glu-lam beam installed upside down, or was it fabricated with tension lams on both top & bottom - balanced layup? The large knot on the bottom would not be unusual on the top - or compression side. Usually tension lams are premium, and are usually located on the bottom of a 1-span beam. If the beam were installed upside down the moment capacity would only be half of what you are hoping for.

2. What kind of soil bearing pressure are you assuming to pick up the reactions from the glu-lam beam? The reactions could get rather large and should be accounted for. Were the foundations increased in size to account for this? This should also be addressed along the back wall.

Good Luck,

Yooper Dave

Dave, I didn't even know there was an up side and down side to glu-lam beams. I love this site. It's so educational. And which photo did you notice the knot in?

Dave,

I've looked at the pictures again and don't see what you see. The GlueLams that I've installed have all had an arrow showing which side is up, but they also have a bow to them, so it's easy enough to put the bow up when installing them.

I do think that a single 2x6 jack stud on the posts isn't enough to support the load of the beam. I like that they are bolted to the posts, but I would have doubled that, and probably tripled them just to be sure that there was enough surface to spread the load, or weight, of that beam on the end of the jack stud.

What sized lumber did you use on the back wall? With the span being half of the open span, you can use less, but I would think a pair of 2x12's with plywood sandwiched between them would be the minimum. Again, I would have doubled those jack studs.

It looks like a very clean framing job. Your workmanship is very good. Thank you for the update with pictures.

Thank you for the questions. The Glu-Lam is installed with the correct side up. They are crowned and marked with "TOP" on the beam. As for soil pressure. I am no engineer. I do overbuild everything. The posts are drilled over 5' into some of the hardest clay/dirt. It was rock solid. They are also setting on concrete and also filled with concrete. Should not be an issue. I think the knot you noticed was near the stairs? It was the size of a dime only in thae corner. The beam was oversized also. I built the loft for 70 pounds per sq foot.

Thank you for the comments. Thee jack stud is a 4X6 and I am also having some plates built that will tie the glu-lam to the posts. As for the back wall. I used a 2x12 and will be adding vertical support to the floor along with OSB on the walls. Was waiting for the support so I could use the scrap 22'' pieces from my steps.

Just saw this post and its exactly what I was planning to do on my barn.Got a couple of questions for you. Did you put something on top of your joist to get the flooring flush with the the top of 2x12 on the rear wall? or did u just butt the flooring up against the back edge of the rear and front of the lvl? Also are joist hanger used on the lvl for the floor joist..And how did u lift it up?
I only have 10' side walls. So not much clearance befor I hit trusses..Thanks for the posting it really help
