Allright - no laughter - I bought a house cuz the wife liked it (of course I got a small tractor outa the deal - cub with a backhoe) LOL:) the house has a tennis court out back- neither of us play tennis. The tractor, lawn mower, jeep , trailer etc all need a home - so brilliant idea -put a pole barn on the tennis court. The problem is how would you seal the edges where the barn walls meet the asphalt? This is a regulation size court, 4"+ aspahalt, coated - I am not sure how to seal the bottom board (2 x 8) around the perimeter of the building to prevent water seepage to the interior of the building -slab is way bigger than barn - any ideas ???? (without trenching in a french drain)

Thank You
Paul

Are you building it the size of the court or smaller? If as big or larger, drill for posts around edges of asphalt, then add some hot mix in or even concrete from asphalt to perimeter board.
If your building it smaller then I would take that new backhoe and dig up the asphalt (trench) where you want to build.

Thanks Davedj1 - the barn will only be a 30 x 60 so it will be well inside of the court perimeter (smaller) , basically only covering the green part where you play , I was hoping not to have to trench it - I was also afraid if I trench there it will allow water to get under the remaining asphalt perimeter and heave that up during the winter - I am hoping this thing is very level (the asphalt) and that the bottom 2 x 8 will lay almost right on the asphalt allowing me to (may be) seal it with fiber board and caulking - I don't know - shoot I don't want to trench the tennis court I have a pond to work on this summer! - that backhoe is fun - I think I just dig things up sometimes for fun ! Thank you for the reply.

If the court is at all level, there is little that can be done to stop the water from entering at any openings, even if you do seal the foot of the walls. You could watch during a rain and see if there are any high spots to build on. Otherwise the options would seem to be elevate your floor or lower the exterior surroundings. Good luck. (At least you have a clear, level building site.)

Your ground needs to slope away from the exterior wall to prevent back flow. Another option is to raise the interior depth with gravel - 6+ inches so that water is less likely to flow in -slope that. Still moisture will want to creep inside the barn Use cinder block all the way around the barn and have the walls meet it. Seal that as an immediate stop to water, then focus on a way to drain the collected water.

Your best bet is raise the level with gravel, or dig up and slope and trench the outside portion of the tennis court. Water will always flow down hill- unless it can't- then it puddles and sits.

if you dig up the asphalt you will need to cut it or you will pull big hunks out under you poll barn ... if it was me i would put a good over hang on the poll barn then this way you could get in there and plow the snow away and any rain should be far enough away that it should help . the only other way is put a boarder under a board and put it down all around the inside this will help but not foolproof . the same as a sill around a house good luck

Build a bigger barn

I might ask a asphalt company what it would cost to put in a 2" layer of asphalt where the barn will go (tapering off outside the walls).
If you have more than 2" of standing water on your tennis court, you will have more to worry about than a little water in the barn.

Thanks Guys - this should be interesting the builder is supposed to have some ideas by Tuesday - I'll keep ya posted - Thanks again
PS - Murphy I like it - however that would be one BIG barn to cover the whole court! :)
