no issues. A company converted a warehouse in STL to an indoor electric cart track. They put down like 4" of special asphalt inside the building. no issues. (other than they ran over budget, then never finished the attached restaurant and went under a few years later because they didnt have the money from the bar/restaurant).

Stupid question... Is there any reason you would not want to enclose an asphalt pad? I am thinking off gas and that sort of stuff.

Building on the court means that you would not have any footings around the perimeter.
My suggestion would be to use, say, 2 x 6's to form a footing with rebar and build the structure on that.
This would assure you of a good base as well as keep any water from entering as well as rotting your wall bottom. Also you should use treated wood for that bottom plate. Well anchor that plate as well due to winds.

Note that the grade boards could easily be leveled while concrete is still wet.

That concrete should not be too costly an add on to the project but a good insurance, in fact i'd think less costly (maybe same) as the notching process.

I am thinking that if the court is crowned, then placing the barn on one corner would insure that you WOULD get runoff into your building. With a crown, the court should be higher in the center than it is around the edges. I would build in the middle of the court, then later on if you decided you need wing sheds on each side, then those sheds to could be setting on the asphalt.
