Pole Barn with no permit

/ Pole Barn with no permit #81
My sister and brother in law wanted a small barn on her place and decided to hire a contractor because they thought the contractor would be more familiar with passing code than they were. She's been in a suit with the contractor for two years now because of all of his goofs.

I agree with Mr. Brown.

Codes inspection doesn't necessarily mean you get what you pay for.

Case in point there have been several case of FHA homes being sub standardand not meeting code and being inferior to homes built in areas where no zoining or building code was required.

I'm about to get the inspection done on a 10x20 portable storage building I built on my NC property. $125 permit fee for a freaking $2000 building. What really chapped me though was the zoning fee- $100.
That consisted of me handing the lady $100, she gets up from her desk walks 8 ft to a map, points to my property and announces I'm in zoning district so and so, sits back down and prints out the zoning permit. 5 minutes and it was $100:(
I can't wait to see what the inspection consists of- I was told on a portable building all they are concerned with is whether it is tied down properly with 6 anchors.
There is no zoning or building code in my county so I don't have to put up with this kind of crap.

I was required to get both a zoning and building permit for this gazebo because it has a "permanent" foundation. My neighbor called Dane County Zoning the day after I began construction to find out what I was building (I already had the permits in place because I knew what a butt he was ;))

I haven't read the thread in it's entirety but my stand is,, I don't so much mind needing to get the permits,,, I wouldn't want everyone in my community to be paying extra taxes because I was evading mine,,, but this inspection stuff and the associated costs is a JOKE, and just another way for them to take my money,, "legally" for nothing!! Be sure a structure built by "code" is not necessarily better than one that was not,,, I built my house a year before "code" and the neighbor built under "code",,, it took them 2 times as long to build it, the additional costs were absurd, and he still has contractors coming back to fix things after 2 years,,, shingles, siding, sofit flying off the place, plumbing problems, electrical problems, so much for the inspections saving him or the next guy who buys the house!!!!!!!! Like I said the whole process is a JOKE from what I have seen of it, nothing but a money taking scam. Well that's my vent for the day!

The permit process where I live has gone to the extreme... The city even has to approve the color and material in the Architectural Review when a building permit is issued and they can also require redesign of the exterior if a wall is too long. This applies to homes in modern, not historic neighborhoods.

Thinking about taking out a tree you planted or removing a dead one... think again. Can't do it without a permit unless it is a Eucalyptus. The permit process involves a public hearing and 6 weeks of posting legal notice throughout the neighborhood.

Many of my neighbors let trees rot and fall over rather than going through the permit process. If it's any consolation, the city says once the a permit has been paid for and the City Arborist makes a cite visit and determines the tree in question is actually dead, the homeowner can file an application for a refund of the permit fees.

The permit was for a culvert not for mowing the area.

You've strayed far from my original message which involved BUILDING inside the ROW... If you built your fence in the ROW, at least in my area, you would need a variance, and then a permit.. etc.

I live in NW Arkansas, I built my house, my shop, my storage shed and im building a pole barn and the only permit I have gotten is for my Septic tank. Rural Water association said I was suppose to call them and let them inspect the plumbing before I pored concrete over it. I told him if he didnt want to turn water on I would sink a well but if he would turn water on if I ever tore the concrete up I would call him to come inspect the plumbing then.

He turned it on.

When my parents were designing the house for their rural property, the engineer told them they don't need any permits. Apparently in our state, if a structure is more than 200m away from a boundary, then you can do what you want.

I suppose there has to be some benefit when you don't get water/sewerage/garbage collection/mail delivery etc

They do have power though :)

Betcha they had to pay for it to go out to them though... I just had.. or am in the process of having power run out to my rural farm property... I've paid the elec co. nearly 5k$ so far... go figure..

Doc Bob, I apologize for my previous posting. I did not fully understand your initial posting. Before I retired, I spent quite a bit of time dealing with building inspectors and permit offices. Yeah, I just love government. In our small rural NC county a permit is not required for an agricultural building. In my opinion that kind of permit, agricultural building, is nothing but a disguised form of TAX, it does not benefit you at all.
