I am concerned about insects ravaging your posts, as they are not debarked...:2cents:
Nice concept, great work and awsome rustic looks!!
You have fully utilized what nature had to offer you, and I quite respect this!:drink:
Well done.

So far so good on the insects. Time will tell. No termites up here, yet. Had some wood wasps / horntails in the beginning.

What species logs?

Mostly balsm fir. Not a real strong wood but it's what was here and I tried to oversize. Have some Hemlock as well. For the boards I had couple big white pine that supplied nearly all of it. Sorry for the year long delay. Hadn't checked this thread and apparently my email filters were messed up.

Very nice.

It appears you have some logs in the ground. What were your thoughts about the risk of them rotting?

The logs are on rock "footings" and covered by the siding. Keeping them off the ground and dry will make the difference. Keeping the roof overhangs wider helps as well. The guy I got the idea from for this construction has buildings 20+ years old so far and it's worked for him to keep the sills off the ground and dry.

Thanks to everyone for the kudos. This was a fun project and really satisfying to build something I use everyday, from the trees on my land. It probably cost me less than $1100 to build and most of that was for metal roofing. A lot of labor and tractor work. My wife looks at me cross eyed but this is what I do for fun. I got to skid logs in the snow, move rocks and dig holes, and raise post and beams. The tractor was a huge part of getting this done.

Again sorry for the year long delay in responding. Email filter mess up.

Old barns are set on rock footings all through New England, and if kept dry, have lasted 100+ years.

What method did you use to hold the logs together? Lag bolts or????

I pegged it with 3/8" steel rod. I got 10' lengths and cut them with a sawzall to the length I needed depending on the log. I rounded off the end on the bench grinder, predrilled the log a few inches to start it, then nailed it in with a 3lb sledge. More labor but less expensive than lags or timberlock screws.

Smart idea. I did similar with rebar for my pump house shed, to hold it to the base, treated 4x4, and hammered it down. So yours is NOT in the ground, is that what I read earlier? No worries about high winds?

I did similar with my pump house but it is sheltered by a 5400 gallon water tank. When I build my firewood storage building it will not have such protection, so I will have to set corner posts at least 3ft deep.

Did you put any head on the steel bar, to prevent pull through?

Yeah, my poles are not in the ground. They're resting on rocks. I did drill a couple of inches into the rocks and pegged the wood to rock with a 6" long piece of 1/2" rebar. I wouldn't have built like this if I lived in a hurricane area like the coast. Like mentioned above I went with how they built the 100+ year old barns up here. Just on rock footings.

The head of the steel bar peened over a bit when hammered in with the 3lb sledge but I didn't put a head on it.

Awesome project!! Like EddieWalker, I'm curious if you have other buildings on your place that match or look similar?
