In all seriousness... most people in the world have so much in common. It is just a few small points of disagreement that cause massive turmoil.

Almost to a tee, every man that I work with has a wife, kids, a mortgage, a job (obviously, as I work with them), bills, and almost the exact same hopes, dreams, concerns and convictions that I do. Yet a few of them make my skin crawl (as I do theirs, I'm sure) because of just one or two points.

Unfortunately, we tend to focus on those one or two points rather than the 98-99% good in the person. But those 1-2 points can be horribly conflicting ideals between us. They can be religious, political, moral, financial, physical, all sorts of things, really. Some times we can agree to disagree if the issues are not too important to us and still maintain a good relationship. For instance, I have a couple good, close friends that I love like brothers, but will not let anywhere near my family! To me, they are totally socially unacceptable with very few redeeming qualities and low moral standards, yet I care deeply for them as human beings. Why?? I have no clue, except they have always treated me well. Humans!

Dang Moss - you went all philosophical on me! I was simply imagining the Marlboro Man at a Star Trek convention... :D

But I agree with you 100% on all points. I am continually amazed at the breadth and depth of character (not all good) of our fellow human beings and can generally find something in common with just about anyone.

I have only a HS education, spent the first 15 yrs of my adult life working the at the low end in the retail/service industry, then walked in ,off the street, into the technical world where I have settled in nicely over the last 15 yrs. My peers are some of the most intelligent people (physics, math, engineering) I've ever met and I consider myself lucky to work along side of them. While our backgrounds and lifestyles are different, we share many of the same values and common interests. Early on, that was a big surprise to me.

The members of this board are another example of your point - a diverse group folks all converging and relating to one another. It is a wonderful thing...

Sweet sentiments Moss, but just like a tiny virus can kill a human, a friendship or even compatibility can be prevented or destroyed by differences in moral, political or religious principles that tend to be ingrained in most folks. There are just some things that folks of character cannot compromise, big things that make them who they are. I believe they are called " Core Beliefs " :)

My dad was in WWII in the south Pacific. One of his duties was a demolitions officer. After one particular battle he had to go through the battlefield and make sure the bodies of the dead enemies were not booby trapped. Along the way, they had to search the bodies for intelligence items (maps, papers, etc...). He was going through a Japanese man's pockets and pulled out a picture of the man with what appeared to be his family. He said the guy appeared to be about the same age as him. The family picture reminded him of his family. He wondered how easily the roles could be reversed, just by virtue of where you were born. Core values are instilled by your environment as you grow up and it takes a lot to change them.

I agree Moss and that is why I worry so about the youth and the core values being instilled in them and I mean the youth of the world. I know my core values and beliefs have served me well and I them for all these many years so I will never compromise them, little things yes, open to compromise but not the core beliefs. The Japanese soldier your Dad examined was unfortunate in his time and place of birth and the poor soul never had a chance to be taught, believe in or adhere to decent values.,

I'll bet he had plenty of decent values. Work ethic, family values, religion, etc... Only thing is we see it from our vantage point, not theirs. Sure, they were ruthless and wrong in their actions. But so were just about every other culture at one time or another in their history. Greeks, Romans, Europeans, Chinese, Genghis Khan, The British empire, the Native American tribes towards each other, the U.S. government towards some Native American tribes, the Japanese toward other Asian cultures, Yikes! The list could go on for a long time. Plenty of decent values in all of those cultures. Just a couple fundamental ones that separate us, yet many that are exactly the same.

Never a truer word spoken .....

Seeing something from another's vantage carries with it the liability of humanizing them ...

Being unwilling to see something from the vantage point of another, of course, does the exact opposite ..... and leads to all manner of evil.
