Pond Building, Hindsight?

Chip,

Here's another good one. After quizzing the insurance company about the pond, I told them there was a dead oak tree overhanging one of my outbuildings. I offered to split the cost to have a cutter come in and drop it, no cleanup, just drop it. I didn't have my tractor at the time and given the trees size, angle of lean and my experience with a saw I wasn't about to attempt taking it down. They declined and told me that since I knew the tree was dead, if it fell on the building I wouldn't collect a cent!!

Russ, the Calif. div. of forestery requires a minimum of a 2,500 gallon tank for rural homes in their district, tank size is keyed to home size. A pond can take the place of the tank only if it is close to the home and has guaranteed all year heavy vehicle access. Pond must be close enough for a pumper to get a hard suction hose into deep water. As you can imagine not many ponds make the access cut.

george

George...what is 'hard suction'...in the genre of water pumping?

Also, what's a dual trencher? I could go for even one!

I would be getting myself a new insurance company/agent. This one is definitely out to gouge their customers.

California State Department of Forestry also recognizes an above ground swimming pool for the tank use, for that matter, even a sunken pool.

Chip, a 'hard suction hose' is just a rubber hose with sidewalls that will not colapse under the pumps suction side vacuum (drafting). A soft 'soft suction' is a canvas or soft rubber hose that is used to attach the fire engine pump to a hydrant. Since the hydrant has a positive pressure there is no need for a hose with stiff side walls. Typicaly a fireman will put his foot on the soft suction and crank up the trucks pump until the hose gets soft. At that point he knows he is getting as much water as possible out of that hydrant without collasping the hose. If he wants to go beyond that he would need to go to a hard suction. This almost never happens due to the problems that it can cause to those attached to that water main, like collasping water heater tanks.
Dual is a company that makes 3 point trenchers for tractors. They were bought out by Woods sometimes back. I think they now call themselves Woods-Dual. I have one of these trenchers and it is a first class machine.

Best Regards,
george
