Hi,
While searching for a way to remove pond muck, I found this website and am hoping for some suggestions. Thanks, Bernard46

Are you speaking of removing it from the pond or the spoils following removal?

I will allow KYDan to reply. But rest assured that pond muck is among the stickiest, nastiest and down right difficult materials to work with. It will stick to your shovel or bucket on your FEL and you might even lose your boots if you step in it and try to get out.

It depends upon the size, composition, depth, and other factors. In my case I have a pond that is about 1.5 acres in size that is fed by a spring and runoff. The pond was not constructed properly initially and the runoff contains silt and is problematic. The southern end of the pond is normally 12-20' deep and the northern end where the runoff enters is about 2-5' deep. During dry summer months I can access the northern end of the pond. I work on either the western or eastern side one summer and clean out above the water table to about the middle of the pond. The next summer I do the other side. I able to clean about 3/4 of the pond this way. When the deep end silts in I will have to use a trackhoe. The northern end I use my tractor, a Kubota MX5100 HST 4WD w/R4 tires & w/LA844 loader and a HD roundback bucket. I have a toothbar, but it is not necessary in the pond. The R4's don't sink into the muck as badly as the R1's and I stay on top of it. I cannot normally fill the bucket completely as it adds to much weight to the front end and I will sink and/or lose traction on the rear tires. I use the rear wheel lock while doing this. The HST greatly helps with this as I can basically do it all with a smooth motion and get in and out of the muck pretty quickly. I compost the muck on the side of the pond and then spread it for topsoil as it is rich in nutrients. I have an EZ Dumper 5 ton hydraulic dump trailer to haul the muck.

My neighbor's family owns a construction company and they have a trackhoe with a telescoping arm with extended reach. It works well in the deep end of the pond. That is by far the best tool if you don't want to drain the pond. And, it is expensive.
