Woody,, Don't forget to taper the side walls of your pond,, I made that mistake when I had mine done several years ago and the sides are still washing in..

Well, yesterday we took the backhoe down to the pond site, and i forgot how nasty the ground is there. we couldnt even get the backhoe to the side that i was gonna start the trench. The ground is flat, but i just cant find the bottom, i can barely walk down there without losing my boots. I think i might need to go for a full size excavator.

I think you are making the right move. Having a full sized excavator will have the reach from dry ground.

We have been reading a lot on ponds as we are trying to improve ours. You would be amazed at the many failures that happen. One of the common problems is that the clay does not go as far as the desired depth of the pond, and people punch through into "tub" and the water never stays year round.

Looks like you're getting good ideas Woodlandfarms makes a good point, without a decent clay bottom you might just be making a hole in the ground. I just finished another pond with my mini{4000lbs} and nortrac doser. I basically did what Dave was referring to. The pond is not huge and only about 6+' deep. We had some nasty rain storms the past few days, it is now full . I am going to use this new pond for koi fish, my other ponds have bass trout sun cat perch and bullhead. I am planning on a carp or 2 to help with weeds.
