Thought of that. It might actually happen too. The foundation is a 200 year old dry laid rubble foundation. I might redo it.

I won't be removing too much dirt arond the foundation, that is for sure.

If you do make the access openings larger is it possible to beef up the header or rim joist and build a new access door to fit the new opening? Unfortunately, when all is said and done with the current project you will need to go back in for other maintenance issues and none of us are getting any younger (most of us not any smaller either /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif)

The summer before I put my boiler system in, I decided to provide access to my basement, which was blasted out of bedrock. Did just what was suggested, some house jacks, a chipping hammer and a chopsaw. Because I had a basement, I even cut and chipped the rock into a set of stairs under my new Bilco door. Sure made life easier. The last time the furnace was replaced, they had to take the cellar stairs out and rig it down.

I have a metal sliding board from a kids swing set that I pulled around with a chain hooked to the tractor. Worked great for hauling 3 or 4 buckets of dirt dumped on it.
Used it a lot for other small loads of stuff too.
It makes a great little compact sled.

If you have room for something like it and a straight shot from it and out the opening It could work for you.

If you had a helper to drive the tractor and 2 chains to pull it with you wouldn't even have to keep crawling in and out of the opening.
