Just started today, when in 4wd, going straight not noticable, when turning a popping noise in the rear wheel area. When 4wd drive not engaged, no problem whatsoever. Is it possible the differiential is partially locked?
Make sure you have not lost or loosened a stay chain which will cause a lower lift arm to flop over and catch a tire in a turn. Happened to me and caused me a worry for a bit.

Unlikely, but possible. It has a spring to return it and I guess it could have broken, but I have never seen that happen. Check for loose real wheel lug bolts as that will make a similar noise.
