Well, an update on my electric pump: it has been steadily pumping for several weeks now, but slowed noticeably a few days ago. Took the hoses off, cleaned a grasshopper and some weeds form the intake, put it back together and it wouldn't pump. Dragged it up to the house and flushed it out with a high pressure hose and several large pieces of grass hopper came out, apparently just the right size and shape to plug everything up. So, based on some input from one more knowledgeable and thorough than myself I installed a footvalve/strainer unit (it goes on the end of the input pipe, is cone-shaped with 1/8" diameter holes and includes a one-way valve which keeps the water and therefore the prime in the pump in the event it was inadvertently shut off (power failure) elimenating the need to re-prime and reducing the possibility of the pump failing if run dry. And it cost a whole 15.00, what a no brainer
