Mike, would a cat work ? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Would it need to be a 240v cat or would any cat work ?

A few days ago I had to put the serpentine belt back on my wifes car. Upon starting the car, a cat got wrapped in the belt good enough to derail and fling it right off. The cat lost alot of hair and some flesh. I can't believe that the cat lived. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Jerry, I learned 30 years ago that cats like to crawl up on warm engines in cold weather. Neighbor across the alley from us had a black cat named Midnight. The lady started the car one day and got that cat caught in a fan belt. Midnight recovered, but the vet bills ran over $1,000 and that was a lot of money 30 years ago.

I agree, both sides will be hot when power comes back on. The transformer that feeds the house takes in a large voltage/low amperage from the single feed line and provides two output windings to give you 240V. as an aside, I have a Lincoln 4000 welder/generator that I used for the last ice storm. Had to watch the load, but managed just fine. Plugged it into my 50A welder outlet in the shop and tripped the main feed breakers at the box on the power pole. Regulated load usage by tripping selected breakers at various locations(house, greenhouse, main box, shop box) Only problem is the small gas tank, had to refill every two hours and the noise, it is not well muffled since it is built primarily to be a weding unit. Now have a DeVilbiss 6KW generator with 7 Gallon tank and pigtail handy and ready to go.

Chet, your example is what I am talking about. Here in CA we have a pair of 12,000 volt distribution wires. From there it goes to a transformer and develops the 120/240V legs. I have a GE transformer book that shows many transformers and even more ways to hook them up. I remember seeing the single high voltage line when I was back in Maine somewhere. Still confuses me a little as to how the two poles come into play. Rat...
