Murph I used that same terminology when I tried for the pin from the back of the tractor. I just could not sneak it out with one hand, so I opted to pull the tire. So, after playing in the snow for a while, I decided to try this.. I did end up taking the wheel off, mainly because I didn't feel like getting wet roling around under the tractor... Getting the wheel off is not that hard, but getting a loaded R4 with tire chains back on is a bit of a PITA.

I am not sure how far I backed the nut, I kept backing till it felt 'right'. What a difference this makes. The lever is much smoother. Too bad they dont come like this from the factory.

I'll thank you anyway. I'd also like to thank the many others who've contributed.

Mine has been stiff since I've had it and I thought that one day I'd get around to it. Today was the day! After reading several questions about how long it took and whether or not to pull the wheel, I decided to give it a go and time myself while doing it.

After looking under it, I quickly decided to pull the wheel.

It took a total of 20 min. Here's the break down.
5 min to jack it up, pull the wheel, roll it out of the way.
6 min to pull the cotter pin, make the adjustment, replace pin.
9 min to replace wheel, install and torque bolts, put away tools.

I probably could have done it quicker but I started the clock when I walked out to the tractor. I didn't bring any tools beforehand so the time includes fetching tools. I also use a 3-increment torque sequence along with a final torque check once the jack was removed.

Here's the list of tools I used.
2 ton floor jack.
22mm 1/2" drive socket (wheel studs)
1/2" drive 10" extension
1/2" drive long handled ratchet
1/2" drive torque wrench
4" needle nosed pliers (straightening cotter)
6" needle nosed Vise Grip pliers (pulling cotter)
10" adjustable wrench (adjust castle nut)

Great timing on this post guys! I just spent 12 hours blowing snow and was thinking how sticky my 3ph lever is. I played with the control knob that governs how fast the hitch drops because mine would go down with a bang or really jerky if you tried to feather it. Adjusting it to turtle mode helped but first thing in the morning I'm going to loosen that castle nut. Thanks for the tips.
