I have always wanted to restore a tractor. Well a friend of mine has a JD model 70 diesel 50s vintage that doesn't run cus the head has been off for years. He thinks he has all the parts but not sure. Now for the good news, he said I can have it for free. Just haul it off. Now my question is, what am I in for on this restore? Will it be a money pit and working full time how many years will this take? Thanks in advance.

It will be a money pit only if you make it. JD 70s are great tractors. If someone said I can have it for free even missing parts I would take it. Too fully restore it you will have close to $3000 in parts if it is in rough shape. There are different levels of restoration
1. Get it running a put on a nice coat of paint
2. Get it running, new tires, automotive grade paint
3. Complete engine rebuild, complete dis assembly, ....

If you worked on it 10hours a week you will have it close to done in a year. Lots of time is waiting for paint to dry and new parts to arrive.

If I were you I would go for it. How often to you get a free tractor and it be a fairly desirable one too.
