Possum ATTACK!

I think the main difference between a rat and a possum is ones called a rat and the other a possum.
Have run into more than one old timer who ate them,I've ate frogs,coons,groundhogs,mudturtles etc,etc,but I ain't never ate a possum[or a rat]...yet.

Yep, I've eaten lots of frog legs, made turtle soup, made blackbird pie, fried meadowlarks, had barbecued raccoon and armadillo, in addition to the quail, pheasant, ducks, goose, bear, venison, moose, caribou, etc. And I'd be willing to try others, but when I was a kid, my mother drew the line at possum and crow. She wouldn't let me bring either in the house or we'd have sure tried them.:D

Um, I've eaten possum....once. Very gristly and greasy with a odd taste. I actually like BBQ coon, believe it or not. Good lean meat with a good flavor. Not at all like possum. I've never had 'dillo. We don't get 'em here...yet. I hear they are getting closer.

I always heard that possum and you were supposed to cook it with sweet taters, but never tried it. When my mother barbecued a coon in the house when I was a kid, it was good, but she said it was such a bad aroma while cooking that she'd never do it again. However, I've since eaten some very good raccoon that was barbecued by others.

There is one possum story I never forgot because I got kidded so much about it. My grandparents bought a house in town in Ardmore, OK, in 1943 when I was 3 years old. It was built in 1921 and had a dirt floored detached double wide garage. And I was probably 4 or 5 years old when I went out there and ran back in the house to tell everyone there was the biggest rat I'd ever seen in the garage. It was only a half grown possum, but I learned the difference between possums and rats.:D
My dad finshed building his new home in 1943.
I was 3 years old when we moved into it then.

LB, my Dad liked to try new things, and was usually successful at all of them, but we moved a lot. I changed schools 12 times in 12 years, although I went to 3 of the schools twice; i.e., moved away and moved back. But my wife's Dad finished building their house in 1943 just before my wife was born, and that house wasn't sold until after her Dad died in 1992.

I When my mother barbecued a coon in the house ...

Well, you must have had a big house to BBQ inside :) :) Move the grill, bbq or smoker away from the house or any people you like. :)

I lived in the house my dad built in 1943 from 1943 till 1964 when I got married.
Since I lived the same place during all my school years I only went to 2 schools.
Grade school about a mile away for grades 1 - 6.
High school about 2 miles away for grades 7-12.
Walked to school till some time while going to high school started riding a bicycle.
Rode the bike to school till I got my first car in 1958 at 17 while i was a Junior and started driving to school.
Before my dad built the house in 1943 we lived in a one room log cabin for 3 years.
It did not have gas or electric.
My grandmother used to call me ABE becaus I was a tall lanky kid and because I was born and lived in the log cabin for those 3 years.
Don't recall any possums around the Log Cabin but I'll never forget the full grown copperhead snake I picked up when I was 3 years old nor the image of my horrified mother when she looked out the cabin door and saw me holding the snake.
It's something that will forever be etched in my mind.

ok.. maybe the title is a bit aggressive.. But let me tell the story...

Let's set the stage:

I live in Western NC, and we are surrounded by woods on all sides. There are about 50 ac around us, and only 8 or 9 houses. Of those 6, are in a 10 acre area footprint.

We have a flock of 20-30 turkeys, at least 1 bobcat, a couple groundhogs, a few moles, a family of racoons, some possums, and at least 1 black bear (multiple people have seen it, I believe 400-500 lbs (as big as my 300CC ATV), a few have said 150-200 lbs).... I am sure there are deer, but never seen them....

It's been cold lately and I have just run off a groundhog that decided a culvert was his winter home.

And now that you have the situation, here is my story.. and I was resting in the recliner.....

Fire was going, I was cozy and then blam, cluck ding.. something fell on the back porch. What the heck... Well being a former US Marine, first thought get the rifle.

Ran to the bedroom, grabbed a little 22 semi-auto..

and flipped on the light on the porch..

And there he was, inside the base of my gas grill!
he knocked out the utentsils and a grill tray..
Hence the noise..
As I stepped out he hissed and growled..

I tried to get him to move along and as I leaned the rifle over to get a stick to push him away..He started to climb out.
and he latched onto my stick!!!

MAN he was fat!

So I drug him to the edge of the porch and tossed him and the stick over the side..

He did not move..
I went back inside..

10 minutes later I went back out and he was gone..
and there was no sign of him..

now here is where I wonder:

1. If he comes back, what would the game warden say if I shot and burried him? Since Possums are short lived anyway why would it matter..

2. there is no food laid out. so I guess the grease tray in the grill attracted him?

3. Why would he be aggressive to grab the stick I poked him with?
typically they just play possum..

4. Will a 22 kill a possum or will I have to shoot that sucker several times?
I figure several times, with fat and all...
I really don't want to use anything bigger... too loud and too many rocks...

anyway,
that's my evening story and I was resting the in the recliner...

Later,
J

If you can't drop that sucker with a .22, then you must be from PI. 2nd Mar Div never could shoot as well as us Hollywood types.
We drop our cattle with a .22 when it's time for butcher.

another old thread...

Well... after much reflection...
I used .22 hollowpoints.. I think they are weak...

But he is dead....

Hollywood types???

Famous, quote:
"old breed new breed, it doesn't matter as long as it is the Marine breed"

besides all you hollywood types were just jealous of our southern bells outside the gate.... :) and you never had the fun of alligator wrestling during land NAV....
