tallyho,

I get your point and I am not so much against a multi thousand acre area with a fence around it. Around here dog and coyote hunters are not very well liked for many reasons any more than fence pen "hunters".

I am a fair chase hunter and eat most of what I kill except varmints and most of them there is nothing left to eat even though they are mostly edible before the 22-250 with 40gr ballistic tips @ 4000+ fps disassembles them.

When I grew up on the farm, our dog ran loose. Before we moved to the farm, we lived in a subdivision. Our dog ran loose there too just like everybody else's dog. We own some vacant rural property. The dogs on that road run loose. One man complained that one of our neighbor's dogs had killed one of his chickens. That dog disappeared. Our neighbors who lost the dog seemed to understand and didn't harbor a grudge.

Where we live now, several dogs run free. I see them on our land. After we get settled in the house we are building, we will probably get a dog for security reasons. We plan to let the dog run free as that seems to be ok where we live. If our dog killed someone's chickens, I wouldn't have a problem if the farmer killed our dog. I figure that's his right. I've heard that once a dog kills a chicken, it's really hard to break that habit.

If someone's dog killed a chicken of ours, I'm guessing that dog would disappear. I suppose it's different if you suspect someone's dog but have no proof. While it's very nice to give the dog owner a warning, I think you are more likely to cause deep seated grudges if you complain to the owner. If you complained and the dog later disappeared, you would always be suspected whether or not you had anything to do with the disappearance. Bad blood between neighbors is to be avoided at all costs; even if that means dispatching of a bad dog in secret.

In some ways, it's sad that dogs can't play in the neighborhood anymore. It's sad that kids play soccer every night across town instead of playing in the neighborhood with the other kids who live there. It's sad that we build back porches instead of front porches and don't know the names of the people who live across the street from us.

I guess that I'm old fashioned and not up with the times.

Obed

Obed just so you knows you are welcome on my front and back porch!

Bad news for me. Billy has picked up his traps and pulled out and gone back to Shreveport without catching a coyote so I don't get to be a TV star.:(

I will continue to use my live trap for a while although it does seem to be a losing battle.

Last night we had 2 visitors but no coyote.

Final idea. Get a coyote call, preferably electronic with a remote. Place it where you can see and shoot from the house and have a clear line of fire. Perhaps you can activate it on occasion an call the critter up when you re ready to take care of it. Yep, costs a lot of your time.

I'm lucky. There is a fellow in my area who has done all kinds of hunting and determined that the most challenging for him is coyotes. He comes on occasion or when I call him. He has been very successful with remote electronic call and lure hunting just after daylight.

I have an electronic coyote call that I have been using in front by my trap. You can see the speaker in the photos in my post #85. It is easy for me to operate this call during the night from inside my home but I can't shoot in this area.

I have to move everything back to my barn to have shooting room but I'm not going to be nearly as comfortable while waiting for Mr Coyote.

I'm going to pick up my trap in a couple of days because I am going trail riding in the Ozarks for a while and I hope when I get back the mosquitoes won't be too bad for me to do a little night hunting.

Hope you have a great trail ride.... and a short wait when you get back to get the coyote in your sights!

How are they getting your chickens, are they not fully enclosed? If not, there is the reason. You kill one opossum, another will replace it, an so on.

I disagree..3 will replace it.:)
