post hole digger and 6\' bush hog pricing?

What are good prices for a post hole digger and 6' bush hog? I am looking at a 40 hp tractor and think these will be the implements I want to buy with it.

I think the 6' bush hog can be bought for about $700-$800 at a tractor supply, but I don't know about the other.

Thanks,
Dave

Re: post hole digger and 6\' bush hog pricing?

I've seen "cheap" PHD's around here for $450 or so but have no idea of their quality.
As far as bush hog's are concerned, I knew when I started that I would put it where-ever I needed to cut so I didn't even consider a light duty unit. Basically you'll get about what you pay for and if I had gone with a $700-$800 unit I would have been spending the $2000 or so required for one that would withstand the abuse in a year or two...
If you're just going to clip pasture or other LIGHT duty work the cheaper ones will be fine. Hope this was helpful.

Willie . . . prices range with quality.

I have a PHD from TSC with 9" and 12" auger bits. It is a cheap PHD that cost about $550 with both bits. I don't do a lot of holes, so it is good enough for me. I'd say the PHD has been used about 100 times in 2+ years, I have a few more holes to dig, but it is obvious I don't make my living putting up fences or decks with the light use it gets. If I "worked" it for my living, I'd have bought a heavy duty unit and gladly paid twice the price.

Rotary cutters are similar. Light duty, medium duty or heavy duty. Prices range accordingly, the heavier duty the longer it will last under heavy use, but the more it will cost.

So the question for you is are you using this implement once a week or a couple times each summer? If you are using it weekly, you might consider going up the scale and getting heavier duty, on the other hand. I bought an expensive & high quality mower deck (finish mower) because I use it constantly, but I didn't see the need to spend more than a few hundred $$$ for a PHD that is used occasionally. As it is, it would have probably cost me more to rent a PHD than it did to buy one, and I have it when I need it. To me, that is a good value.

Re: post hole digger and 6\' bush hog pricing?

I'll be using the both the PHD and bush hog for light duty things. The first time I mow my new place will be a little rough, but after that it should be pretty easy. I will also only be doing it 3 times a year.

I agree the more $$$, the better equipment. I'll try to get the better equipment if I can afford it.

Thanks,
Dave

Re: post hole digger and 6\' bush hog pricing?

Like Bob, I have a TSC PHD w/12" auger. I have only dug around 20 holes so far, and part of that was planting trees. I do have some future fencing to do, but even that will be a limited use so I don't need a heavy duty PHD. The few times I have used it so far, it worked great.
I have a light duty Howse 6' cutter that I bought 3+ years ago for $500. I mow about 4 acres every 2 weeks or so and about 10 acres about 3 times a year. Plus occasional brush clearing as I recover grown up areas around the creek. It has done all I have asked with never a complaint.

If you are doing light work, then take a look at the local TSC store Farm & Fleet, or similar type of store. My PHD is the cheapest I could find, and it does the job I ask.

Re: post hole digger and 6\' bush hog pricing?

I recently bought a BushHog 286 6' hog with front chains (same as Glenn's) for $1650. My nearest dealer in GA quoted $1600 for the unit w/o guards, my 'bota dealer said that that was below his cost, but the NH dealer in TN said he'd sell for the $1650. No usage yet, but it appears to be able to withstand anything I'll throw at it. It's considered to be medium duty. Gearbox is rated to 90hp, very heavy construction (weighs about 900#).
