I purchased a 1.5 ton mini-excavator auger off ebay this past spring for $300. I bolted the mounting bracket to an Amazon purchased $100 SSQA plate that I also use for lifting stuff (no heavy bucket reducing my lift capacity). I added a $600 3rd function valve and $100 in QD fittings and metric to NPT adapter fittings.

It works very well.

In the future I might make an adapter to put it on my tractor's backhoe for a little extra reach on rough terrain, but I'd need to add a rear remote and run some longer hoses.

I switched from a 3 point auger to a ssqa loader mount auger and the difference is night and day. As PTSG states, the down pressure and reversing are the big pluses.
Hydraulic augers do cost more, but worth every penny if you're doing a lot of holes with it (imho). Mine is a Land Pride SA20 with the low flow motor.
I agree. Moving the loader interrupts hydraulic flow to the auger. So it's a bit fiddly raising or lowering the auger while spinning is fiddly. But down pressure & the ease of mounting is with it.
