Yes I was able to lift it high enough, but what I did was start each hole with the unextended auger as I felt I had better control, add the extension when at max depth. Adding the extension was quite simple and only took a few minutes. Using pins would be quicker. As can be seen in the pic, the spoils were something of balled up clay and I had to help them out using a narror trench spade, even the unextended auger would not spew them out and away.
