Yes I was able to lift it high enough, but what I did was start each hole with the unextended auger as I felt I had better control, add the extension when at max depth. Adding the extension was quite simple and only took a few minutes. Using pins would be quicker. As can be seen in the pic, the spoils were something of balled up clay and I had to help them out using a narror trench spade, even the unextended auger would not spew them out and away.

Great. Perhaps you can make it adjustable for use at either 12 or 8?

When I had it built, I left a lot of room to modify it. When I drilled and reamed the holes for the pins, I left if at full length of the large diameter shaft (18"). I could cut it shorter, or use smaller diameter shaft closer to the end which would extend it another 8". It worked great, but I'm going probably settle on 10"-12" which I could extend another 8" longer if need be.
