I have a JD 4400 tractor. I'd like to get a 3 pt hitch post hole digger. Any recommendations on a decent one for medium duty work?

To be honest all brands are decent. Most all are made about the same with very few problems. The good thng about the bushhog is it would be easier to get parst in most cases...

As FTCKUBOTA (had to be careful typing that name!) said, what I have researched, most are about the same (others will disagree). With this information, I purchased a Leinbach PHD since it was less expensive than the Land Pride my dealer was also selling. You may want to check out either the Leinbach 7300 or 7200 PHD. I have drilled 50 holes with no issues.

I bought a Rhino PHD with 9" Auger. I believe that is their medium duty unit and it was $800 or so. I have sunk about 40 posts without issue.
There were a few post holes that I really could have used the hydraulic downforce attachment they sell for some PHD's but not mine.
Also building a stand or using one of those HF engine hoists make attaching/removing the PHD from the tractor a bunch easier. All the weight is in the gearbox pumpkin and it is hard to move alone.

I bought one from T.S.C.,Speeco.I've drilled about 50 holes so far.You can replace the tips and cutters on the augers.I had an old snapper rider and other parts and made a four wheeled carrier for it based on a model I saw a while back.

If you go Bush hog, get the 2102 over the 2101. The 2101 uses proprietary shear pins, which must be gotten from a dealer and are expensive (like $9 each). The 2102 not only is a heavier gear box, but also uses run of the mill 3/8" soft bolts that you can buy at any hardware store for less than $2 each.

I have a Speeco also from TSC and have drilled over 200 holes in some nasty soil and still am using the same cutters. Some of the Speecos take 3/8 grade 2 sheer bolts and some take 5/16 grade 5 sheer bolts. Mine is the latter. I've had no issues with mine.....:)
