Post Katrina

Geez, I lose phone connection for a measly 8 days & there are pages & pages of new tbn posts to read. Am I ever behind.
No flooding at my place but plenty of wind. Lost my roof & most of my largest trees. We already really miss the shade we used to have. However, we are so blessed to have made it without a direct hit on our house, barn or my workshop. Still no electricity & it is not expected for weeks. I'm typing by the power of a new generator - - sure wish I had gas cans to put gas in to keep it running.

Sorry if this doesn't make much sense, but the last few days are sort of a blur.

I'm going to post a few pictures without much narrative. They pretty much speak for themselves.

Yep, I'm surprised too at getting my land phone line back so soon. I don't expect power, however, for weeks. Sure hope that generator hangs tough.

We'll find out how good our insurance is if an adjuster ever shows up. By the way, the stories I'm hearing about FEMA seem to be genuine - - won't go into details, but I have not been impressed. Makes me wonder what that 'E' stands for in the acronym.

Well, it is a government agency, if you set low expectations you won't be dissapointed.

I am hearing the same complaints about FEMA and Katrina that I have heard with the four storms that hit Florida last year and all of the storms that have hit NC since I have been here.

The local and state governemt really are the first responders in these disasters. The Feds come in later, if you are lucky with the military, but usually with the big dollars. FEMA cannot move fast enough for the people impacted by the storm. And with Katrina destroying almost 200 miles of the gulf coast FEMA has a lot of work to do.

At least the military is down there helping. After Floyd flooded eastern NC, there was NO help from the US military with the exception of a handful of rescue copters. Even with Ft. Bragg, Camp Lejune, Pope AFB, Seymore Johnson AFB, and Cherry Point right in the middle of the mess there was not movement from those facilities to help out. None.

The work was done by volunteers, the Red Cross, and the National Guard. FEMA came in and provided housing, money, etc. But they don't move fast enough. Not sure that they can.

And Katrina is a HUGE mess. I heard this morning that the four storms that hit Florida last year destoryed 27,000 homes. New Orleans has lost an estimated 200,000 homes. The rest of the Gulf coast has lost another 100,000 homes. If people thought the price of lumber and plywood was high before, just wait.... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Tdog... man what a mess to see. Did you all stay there and experience that first hand? You didn't say but did everyone in your family come through this without injurys? I will be praying for you, your family, your friends and neighbors. May God be with you all. I am sorry for your loss.

What type of generator did you get? Are you running your whole home on it?

We have missed you being here. Welcome back and keep us posted. If you need anything just ask... if I can help I will.

Yeah, we stayed. You have no idea what 100+ mph winds feel & sound like outside your house - - we ended up spending quite a bit of time in the garage in the cars at the south end of the house, the end opposite the wind direction at its highest. We were so blessed - - no direct hits; also, it was a fast moving storm. I was outside standing behind a chainsaw by 3:30 pm or so. And my BX-22 earned its keep big time the last few days. For some reason, not many FEL's around here.

Thanks for your thoughts & prayers. We are in good shape compaired to the homes of many of my New Orleans, Slidell, & gulf coast friends who were flooded & in some cases swept away.
