Mike, I don't bother with pulling off the suckers, I usually put in 16 tomato plants and between all we can possibly eat, we still give hundreds of pounds away. You can also can tomatoes in the oven, just put the tomatoes in with a canning lid and seal, turn the oven to 250 degrees and bake them for a couple of hours. Let them cool and every jar will seal. I don't know hwere the wife learned this but it's the only way we can tomatoes anymore. My mother bought a device that grows the tomatoes from the bottom, the dirt goes into a plastic tube that is about 7-10" in diameter and hangs upside down with the tomato coming out the bottom, it hangs on a hook or stake and the tomato grows toward the sun. She bought us one and we have a plant growing in it but it's too early to tell much about it. I'll let you know how it works. It's great for apartment living, still lets you have homegrown tomatoes.

Mike, one more thing to keep in mind, get the concrete wire that has the 4 X 4 openings, the 2 X 4 openings won't let you get the larger tomatoes out without going up out the top of the cage.

DocHeb, I understand that this works well for polebeans as well but haven't tried it myself.

I've cut them in half (so they're 2 1/2 feet high) and used them to hold up snap peas (that tend to fall over). I've also used them for small gourds.

Bill last season we tried the upside down planter also. It does work as advertised but you will need to water your plant more often as the soil within will dry out faster than your garden soil. Plus you better have a stout hook to hang it on cause once it's watered the thing gets quite heavy. We tied ours to a high tension tower on our property knowing that blasted tower wouldn't be going anywhere. The wife took it down a week ago and threw it in the pole barn so I guess that's that. Glad I didn't write that check. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
