I have never grown garlic although I love to add it to just about everything we cook (It brings out the Italian in me). Here's a tip from a friend of mine that grows several different varieties of garlic. There's no need to weed garlic in the spring if you top it with a cover crop of oats in the fall. The oats crowd out the weeds come spring and they also improve the soil when they finally break down into organic matter.

( Mike, you're correct about wood chips tying up nitrogen if the chips are tilled into the soil. If they are just sitting on top of the ground for weed mulch, then this isn't a problem. )

I agree, I leave my chips on the surface, then at the end of the growing season, till them in and move to my next plot, where I start all over. Add some nirogen to the old plot, so the wood chips can degrade.

We planted two/three weeks before memorial day which was an early start for us in southern, MI. The Texan's 'planted the seed' (to coin a phrase) for me to get the garden started early, after a long cold winter. Pictured is one of the tomato plants. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Took this early this morning. 12 broccoli plants produced this. 12 more about 10 days off yet. We'll eat enough in the next few weeks to get Exxon excited about gas rights. Most will get froze for things like Christmas dinner, Thanksgiving, or when I get to craving broccoli.

Headed to the garden again in a few to cut 14 head of cabbage. Wife wants to start cutting kraut in the morning.
