This is the best I've used. They are heavy, but more efficient. My set is extremely old, likely 75 years old.

This is the best I've used. They are heavy, but more efficient. My set is extremely old, likely 75 years old.

1000% Used one as a kid on the farm, bought one for myself. Most capable tool that does what it's designed to do.

I actually posted a thread on this digger a while back. You can probably search it.

I used to use the old clamshell diggers, and then bought a property with one of the "Nu Boston" type. I will never use the old style again. The articulated ones get so much more soil out each time. A pleasure to use one.

Every time that I've ever used the clamshell type, I've ended up catching my fingers between the handles. I guess I'm just a slow learner.

i had to use one of those for years in my younger days. Useless piece of cra*. The inventor needs to be strung up.....but I rant.

Hey - I didn't find the clam shell digger so difficult. Matter of fact - I still have it. Haven't had to use it in over........ 39 years. Had to use it EXACTLY 18 times. Number of holes for the 6x6's needed to build my multi stall carport.

I’ve dug hundreds of holes for deck footings and fence posts with manual post hole diggers. Actually worn out a few sets. Yeah, they are a workout to use, but they work and many a man before me used them.
Cant use a TLB for every task….

I have the kind that you spin into the ground. It works great until you hit a rock bigger than a golf ball.

Agree, and make sure the ground it damp. If the ground is dry soak it; after you have dug in a foot or so pour water in the hole and let it soak over night.

For sure marhar. All the 18 holes I dug were in the spring. This time of year - would be like concrete.

I started out with your basic clamshell post hole digger with wooden handles, and hated it. I found them to be very hard to dig with and pretty much a waste of time. Then I came across a great deal on a used, all metal post hole digger that was quite a bit heavier. They where cheap enough that I figured I'd give them a try.

I was very surprised at how much better then worked. I use it's weight to do the digging, and get a work out lifting it out of the hole. The weight is an issue after awhile, but the difference in how well it digs is night and day.

If I need to dig a couple of holes, I'll use the metal clamshell post hole digger instead of attaching my auger to my tractor. It's faster and easier to do them by hand if it's just a couple of holes!!!

That's the same with me and my Wallenstein chipper. Folks come out - see a few old pine limbs - here and there. Ask why I don't hook up the chipper and chip them. They have no idea how long it takes to - drop the rear blade - hook up the chipper - chip a few limbs - unhook the chipper - hook up the rear blade. I'd ask them to help me - right then - but I don't want them to get smashed hands/fingers.

I thin my pine stands and chip in the spring. I will make a quick run around the property and chip any limbs I see then. Hey - they aren't going anyplace - anytime soon.
