Potatoes Off To A Great Start

Well, dug our potatoes today. Got them coming out the ears! Numerous weighing in at 2lbs.+ .Here is a couple:

My wife called me a dork when I was taking a picture of a 'tatoe with my hand as a reference.

Glad to see I am not the only one.

I think the best way to figure yield is pounds of seed giving total pounds of harvest. 50lbs of seed in, 500 lbs out, for example.

Right now, my harvest is not complete, so I am guessing. Hope to finish that this week.

Nice looking taters Bp.

Do you sell any and how do you plan to store them?

That is a funny looking mater in the box. It looks like it could be milked.

Ah, yes. That box actually has three varieties of tomatoes in it. The goofy looking ones are a variety of Roma. The things produced like little I've ever seen in over 50 years of doing this. Apparently, they are the sauce kings.

Next year, I will change up both my tomato and potato varieties, just because I can.

i've been digging a row as needed to use and sell but i think the best place to store the potatoes this time of year is in the ground.

We love the Romas for sauces. This year has been tough with all the rain. Makin my salsa first, then on to juice. I have some other tomatoe plants that went 6-7' (I'm 6'2") They are taller than me. But they just are not producing like years past. My sweet corn, taters, did well though.

I went ahead and dug all mine because of the extremely wet weather around here. Figured I'd beat the potato
maggots and rot that way.

I intend to dig the rest of potatoes tomorrow. There's rain in the near future, so there's no sense leaving them in the ground. We've finally cooled off, thank the Lord, so I won't have a stroke working them. My back has been out for three days, but feels a little better tonight.

So, tomorrow, we dig the rest. When I get a final poundage count, I'll let you know my final production figures. One of the best years ever, that's all I know. Been a fun thread, and thanks to all who've "played along".

Done. What began 4 1/2 months ago with planting 50 lbs of Red Skins came to fruition today. Finally done digging and picking up. They are in the barn. Whew!!

Final count came to slightly over 500 lbs, so the production factor was a whopping 10. These potatoes, like the rest, where 100% organic, no pesticide, no herbicides and no chemical fertilizers and grown on "virgin" soil, tilled up for the first time last fall.

I proclaim it the Best Potato Crop Ever!! Some of these monsters are 4 and 5 inches diameter. Unbelievable. In over 50 years, nothing like I'd ever seen.

Went ahead and plowed that area, since the plow was on anyhow. I'll be dumping chicken bedding and leaves on it soon enough.

Next year? Likely some Russets and Yukon gold. We'll see.
