Poulan Pro Riding Mower Reverse Problems

I have a 42" Poulan Pro Model #PPR204ST that will not go into reverse forward speeds ok but when I release the clutch in reverse it does not back up. Any one know what causes the problem and how to fix?

Does it have a geared transmission or a wheel on a disc drive similar to a Snapper Rider?

Unknown has six speeds forward and one in reverse.

Do you have to push in the clutch to shift gears?

I can shift without pushing the clutch I think but I always stop and push clutch in before shifting. The linkage was kind of corroded and I sprayed it with WD30 and the shift lever moves free but when I release the clutch in reverse it does not move.

If it has a rubber tired wheel that spins against a disc, I have an idea of what's causing the trouble. If it has a geared transmission, transaxle, or hydrostatic drive I'm lost too. The following link should show you what the wheel looks like.

Either a bent shift lever or a broken reverse chain in the tranny.

I have no lever on my poulan pp14a42 riding mower, it has a pedal, and frequently won't engage to reverse, any ideas?
