Power Beyond Installation

It hasn't been quite a year, but we did discuss it briefly when I got the tractor. I decided to go ahead and try it out and see if it works. I haven't had too much problem with it, but it worries me some.

I don't mind paying the cost of the PB -- at least not up to what it would have cost me to have had it included when I first bought the tractor. I'm not too keen on paying over $300 more than I would have paid to have it installed properly in the first place.

Thanks guys.

For what it's worth, when I ordered my tractor I discussed adding a PB kit at the same time they were setting up the tractor for delivery (including a 3rd SCV) to save overall installation expenses. My dealer also assured me that it would cost exactly the same to do the PB later and since I wasn't getting the hoe yet, I let it go.

That's interesting Tim. Did you discuss with your dealer how much it was going to cost to add the PB at the time of purchase? Was it the $232 or so that the JD configurator shows as the price of the PB or was the dealer going to charge you additional for the installation?

I can say that when I ordered my 3320 with 448 and PB, that the dealer installed the PB. My tractor did not come off the lot, but was ordered from the factory as configured. A couple of the options were dealer installed. I think the PB was always intended to be a dealer installed item, although in my case it was on backorder so I guess I can't say for sure. I got the tractor first and when the PB later came in, they picked up the tractor from me and installed it at the shop. They didn't charge me anything for the install. I have the installation manual for the PB that came with the 448. If you want to see it, let me know. Also, when the dealer finally got the PB, it came with one wrong part (one of the solid hydraulic lines). They'd never seen that happen before, but got the right part quickly and finished the install. I remember them saying it took several hours to install and although they removed the rear tires to swap them for added width, I believe they would have taken them off anyway for access. Mine happens to have loaded tires so I was happy they did the install. Otherwise, I might have enjoyed doing it myself. I also use the PB for a 3PH log splitter. This works very well for me. When an attachment is connected to the PB, the rock shaft arms don't lift. They stay put at the last setting or can be lowered. The FEL is completely unaffected by PB.

Thanks for that helpful post and information. I was reviewing the backhoe manual today. I was wondering if it might have some kind of warning about using the BH without the PB. It didn't. It does, however, include as part of the instructions "install Power Beyond." One warning that it does have is to not leave the hyrdraulics in "relief" position for more than 10 seconds straight. I belief this is what's basically happening when I've got my wing nut holding the valve open but I'm not operating any aspect of the backhoe.

I've made up my mind to get the PB. I just hope I can get the dealer to install it without charging me an arm and a leg.

Don't remember what the actual price was, just that the dealer said that it wouldn't make any $$ difference doing it along with the other two options I was getting (3rd scv and Draft Control) versus doing it later. I had thought that if a fair number of things had to be removed (rear tire and/or seat deck) then it might help to do it all at once.

I thought the same thing, that it would be cheaper to do it at the time of purchase. I know that if somebody had told me it would cost more than double to do the PB later I would have just done it at the time of purchase. I'll let you know how the dealer deals with it.

Below is the response from JD. It's clear that the PB is the only way to go:

>Per the factory, you should have the power beyond kit installed on his
>tractor for proper operation of the backhoe. Unlike the 3rd SCV, the
>power beyond provides a continuous flow of hydraulic oil and a pressure
>free return of the hydraulic oil to the reservoir which creates the
>least amount of heat in the transmission/hydraulic system. Using the
>3rd SCV to power the backhoe can potentially overheat the hydraulic
>system and cause damage to the transmission since they have a common
>reservoir. Please consult with your dealer for resolution.

That's pretty much the same information I got on this list. Good work guys!
