I'm considering adding a grapple to my bucket and checked on the PB kit to do that. They want $225 for the PB and another $165 for some sort of rear quick release kit. Is this kit just some hoses, couplings and a metal plate to mount to the rear of the tractor? Do I need it? Or can I come directly off of the PB and go to my valve?

Thanks,

P7

My 790 power beyond kit (actually Rear auxiliary hydraulic - BM18005) was $220 and was complete. I think it would be difficult to connect to the valve w/o this kit. It included the plate and connectors at the back of the tractor and the bypass hose that is needed if the Power Beyond isn't hooked to anything.

The power beyond on a 790 will be mounted under and behind the seat. The couplers point straight back. It is convienant for a backhoe, log splitter or power tilt. It would be a long run up to the FEL.

Make sure whatever you attach has an open center valve OR the short connector hose is attached. If you run the tractor and those two ports are not connected and fluid flowing, you will be looking at an expensive repair bill.

I ran my PB from the back to a valve on the right fender and then from the valve to an angle kit for the FEL blade and to my TnT. It wasn't too bad a run to the right fender. The alternative would be to put in a diverter valve and have the diverter switch between one of the FEL functions and the angle function. I knew I wanted a TnT so the separate valve worked best for me.

Thanks all!
After looking up the BM18005 on the JD site, I found the rear quick release kit; What that is, is an extension kit from the 4 ports going to the loader to move them to the rear.

The salesman at our local dealer is a nice guy, but this is not the first time he's proven he's not the sharpest pencil in the cup.

Mech: Any chance you might have some pictures of your setup on the 790? I have a 4300 and want a blade tilt in the rear and a fel blade angle in front. I was wanting to see the plumbing if possible. I have a hard time envisioning it. Thanks

I will try to get some pictures as soon as I can. Meanwhile a few things I learned from this project. I knew nothing about hydraulics before I started this but got a lot of information searching and asking questions on TBN.

Get a valve that has a capacity that exceeds the GPM that your tractor is rated for. The hydraulics flow in series so anything below your gpm will restrict the total flow. Tractordata has your tractor rated at 12.9 gpm, my 790 is rated at 5.6 gpm (I have some serious hydraulic envy).

The valve of course needs to fit where you want to put it and you want to get enough spools to cover whatever you might want to do in the future. I got the valve, see picture, because it fit and had enough flow to not hinder the 790s already anemic (although always been more than adequate for me) hydraulics. I got it from Hydraulicstore.com, Bucher Manual Monoblock Directional Control Valve. I did not get float on any spool. This might be a bit small for you. They have a 17 GPM model.

I especially like this valve because it is small, relatively inexpensive and because the handles can mount vertical or horizontal so I have my angle mounted vertical and the two TnT handles mounted horizontal so I do not grab the wrong one.

I bought the angle kit for my frontier FEL blade which has two single acting cylinders (I have seen some hydraulic angles with one double acting cylinder) and I then bought the TnT cylinders from CCMachinery.com and lots of fittings and hoses along with field attachable hose ends to build the hoses to the exact lengths I needed.

Materials:
  • Valve
  • Cylinder(s)
  • Hoses and connector ends
  • Fittings to swivel and convert between all the different fittings
  • Tie wraps
  • Washers, nuts, and bolts to mount the valve
  • Quick disconnects (optional) (Since I take my blade on and off and I wanted to allow the option of taking the FEL off, I have Quick Disconnects at the front of the loader and where the FEL hydraulics disconnect)
  • Nylon sleeve material (optional)
  • Materials to build attachments for the quick disconnects (optional)

Connections:
  • Power beyond ports to in and out on valve
  • Blade Angle:
[*]One side of one spool to one single acting cylinder
[*]The other side of the same spool to the other single acting cylinder
  • TnT:
[*]Each side of one spool to two connectors on the top double acting cylinder
[*]Each side of the other spool to two connectors on the tilt double acting cylinder

The biggest problems I had where were where to run all the hoses (It is pretty tight on a 790) and getting all of the correct fittings to adapt between the cylinders and valve ports and of course paying for all of this because it is not cheap.

Not sure how much they will help you but I've included a bunch of pictures. My next project is putting lights on the top of the canopy. I'm also planning to shorted the hoses going from the Power Beyone to the valve when I get some time. Don't know what I will do with my weekends when I run out of projects for the tractor.

Well that didn't work. I attached about 15 pictues and none of them made it. I will try a few at a time. These are of the Angle Kit.

Great looking setup Mech. I can almost picture all that hardware on my 790! Of course, my pictures won't have those mountains in the background. Is that just to make us even more jealous?

But, impressing your freinds on the internet: Priceless!

Thanks for letting us learn from your experience.

I was originally wanting to add a hydraulic center link, so I could lift my rotary cutter up high for crossing terraces and ditches (it bottoms out on a foot drop, but I don't have those tall tires) and one of the add-on grapples to my bucket.

After seeing that, I can appreciate that having full TnT on the box blade could be really convenient. If I understand it correctly, with that valve and simalar set up, I could do it all!

Glad to see lots of 790 owners showing up. With the 2000 series being so popular and the 790 being somewhat unique in the line up. I've been wondering if I bought the proverbial red-headed-stepchild.

Regards,

P7

Thanks Mech: That is really helpful. If you do not mind my asking. How much did all this cost to complete your setup?

The valve was about $200, the Frontier Kit about $240, the TnT cylinders $460 with shipping, the JD quick disconnects over $200, Power Beyond about $220, all the hoses, connectors, pipe sealer, ties, sleeve material, metal for brackets, nuts and bolts, etc, I don't know exactly but over $300. Total probably over $1500-$1600 w/o me finding all the invoices. I sure you can do the cylinders cheaper by finding them yourself and you don't have to get JD Quick Disconnects except where you have to connect to the power beyond ports. I won't get much use out of the TnT until I start grading in the spring but the front blade angle works great with the snow. I'm thinking about picking up a PTO snowplow if I can find a deal in the spring/summer and then may put quick disconnects on the one of the TnT cylinders or put a diverter valve in and re-purpose that control valve for a hydraulic control on the chute. There is just no end to how much you can play with these trac-toys.

Since mountains were mentioned I've included a panarama that my photographer wife did from behind our house, a picture from the deck off of our bedroom and our last really big (5-6 ft but 3 days of melt in the picture) snow. I don't drive 51 miles one way to work for nothing! Now back to tractors.

Let us know how you make out with the grapple. I have 790 I bought in 2000, with FEL. I mainly use it for brush clean up, it is difficult at times to keep a load of brush on the bucket, usually ends up stacked up on the loader frame and I hate that...I've seen ad's for the grapple attachment. How permanant is the grapple mount? Can you easily remove/replace? I have power beyond.
A funny story about power beyond, My friend has JD 970, wanted PB for log splitter, he buys the kit and begins to install same on tractor, as he was removing bolts on rear of tractor, he hears a clunk. He dropped a bolt inside the tractors rear, afraid to start it, he called dealer who promply came to his house and hauled to shop. It turned out to be an expensive power beyond lesson.

Something I discovered with my 790/ #70 loader, it has metal wedges which shimes the loader into the frame mount. The left wedge came loose, allowing the loader to pop off the mounting bracket (as I was hauling top soil). I drove wedge down and tightened it up, but, while using the loader, can see that its getting play in it again. I thought about laying a few beads of weld across the wedge, building it up, before driving it back in, tighting it down. Funny thing is, the wedge doesn't appear worn, I can't figure out why it keeps becoming loose! Anyone have any ideas? I like the #70 loader for what I do with it, but, the few times I've used it for heavier work, it seems to flex alot Ron L. (New Park Pa)
