You don't want anything tore up; leave it alone:rolleyes:

You can make mods to things without tearing stuff up.... You just have to pay attention. Who has welded hooks to their buckets.... who has adjusted the pressure relief setting higher....

I am in no way shape or form a HP junkie that wants to see how far and fast I can drag a lead sled. I would just like better mileage and occasionally a little more HP pulling through the flint hills. I just want to do it safely. :)

How does a chip increase power AND mileage? The increasing power part, I can understand--more fuel = more power. It's the better mileage part that trips me up. What does a chip do to increase combustion efficiency?

I'm sorry, I missed it. I didn't see any explanation for increased efficiency, only claims of it.

I have 3 powerstrokes, a 1999 7.3, 2004 6.0, and a 2006 6.0 and only run Quadzilla. Lowest egts period. I have tried most all of them and never had a problem with any. Quadzilla is just my personal favorite. I also don't care for programmers, I like chips so I can change on the fly or detune it if I am going to pull a load over 12,000# which I do at least twice a week. I put high flow exhaust and air intakes also on my trucks. I am not sure of the gains on my 7.3 but my 2006 F-350 4x4 with 3.73's gets a honest 17 mpg around town and 24 mpg on the highway. To really increase millage on a automatic you can control the torque converter and lock it up earlier. On most factory setups the torque converter is not locked up till at a steady state, ie going down the road at a steady speed.

I often wonder how you can increase power and mileage at the same time in a diesel engine, just by changing a program.

like someone else said, intake and exhaust restriction need to be improved upon, without those it seems to me the only way to make more power in a diesel engine is to burn more fuel and that would reduce mileage, at least to my way of thinking.

Did you check your milage/ horsepower after the intake and exhaust up grade, with out the chip? That would be interesting. I would like to do a 7.3 box truck but can't find chip info, not the same as pick up I've been told.

Never did on the 7.3 but on my 2006 6.0 they had a recall on the chip. I sent it in to get the latest program flashed on it and did a 240 mile trip to the in-laws during the week and a half it was gone and lost 3mpg. I am sold on chips. I do them after the first oil change to let things wear in on all my new trucks. I have never had a problem tearing anything up. On my 2004 F-250 4x4 I am running a nearly a additional 215 HP at the rear wheels. I took it to the drag strip and it did a mid 14 sec 1/4 mile at 97mph . I had to run it in 4 wheel high off the line and then went to 2 wheel drive about mid track to get it to hook up. Its a automatic like all my trucks and will break the rears loose at 65 mph if I step on it. It is still very reliable daily driver that tows trailers that range from 7,000# to 16,000# weekly.

I have an Edge Juice chip in my 03 Duramax, I installed it around 8 k miles, I now have over 72k miles on truck, and around 64k chipped. I am very happy with edge and would not hesitate to buy another Edge fueling box, as I have had absolutely no problems with their product. MY chip is the earlier 4 level chip with no in cab monitor, level 1 being +40 hp and around 100 lb. ft at rear wheels, and 4 being +90 hp and 259 lb ft at the wheels. In level 1 and 2, mileage is slightly worse than stock empty, by .25 to .50 mpg with a conservative driving style. Towing on the other hand, has showed a consistent gain of 2 to 3 miles per gallon towing my 28 ft. enclosed car trailer weighing around 8,000 pounds through the mountains on the east coast. In level 2, with the cruise set at 70 mph, I have not encountered a grade that will make the Allison downshift out of overdrive, unchipped the first year I had the truck, it would easily maintaine 70 MPH on the same grades, but would downshift about 1/4 of the way up, and would not return to overdrive until the road began to flatten out. The highest EGT I have seen is around 950 climbing the big 5 mile grade towing south on Pa 76 Near west Virginia on a hot afternoon , passing a annoying driver with my foot to the wood at speeds approaching --? MPH. It did downshift that time LOL.
