OK, a couple ways to do this but let try this one: Do a Right mouse click on the "Start" button from the desktop (normally at the button left-hand side of the screen) this will popup a menu, Click on "Explore" from that menu. This will open a window and on the same line as "File, Edit, View, Favorites, click on "Tools", a dropdown menu opens, click on the bottom one "Folder Options..." That will open a popup window, Tabs are listed as General, View, File Types, Offline Files... Click on "File Types". This should list Registered files types, use the scroll down bar on the right of the file types list and see what is listed for "PPS". If you don't see PPS listed, you have to do an extra step, click on "New", this will open a small popup window, type "PPS" (no quotes), then press the "OK" button. THEN the extension should show PPS. Click once to highlight it, then click on the "Change..." button. Yet, another popup window... click to select the "Select the program from a list" and press the "ok" button... (you're close and yes, another window opens  ) Hopefully, the viewer will come up as the Recommended Program since it *is* a Microsoft product... if not, look under "Other Programs" for it. Worst case, you'll have to click on the "Browse..." button for (yup, you got it) another window... which will list Program Files (actually folders) Look for the one the viewer is in... if you get stuck at this point... I'll download the program and see where it installs itself (or someone else who's done it can chime in ;) ), you should ba able to click on the program and press OK to close all the open windows. If you get a bad message, you might have to "show" your e-mail program (roughly) about the same thing.

PS. I'm sure there is a much easier way... I just don't go that route :D

OK, when I get to the Folder Options, Tabs are listed as General, View, File Types, (but I don't have the "Offline Files" tab). Then when I go to the File Types and scroll down, there's:

PPS Microsoft Power Point Slide Show
PPSM Microsoft Power Point Slide Show
PPSX Microsoft Power Point Slide Show
PPT Microsoft Power Point Presentation

And when I downloaded the program, I let it put it in the "downloads" folder. But I'm not sure where it "installed" it.

Lets try another thing first, in the e-mail program that you use, go to the one e-mail that has a .PPS attachment and try to do a right mouse click on the pps file. Does that open a window that gives you an option to "Save" the file to the desktop (or someplace you can get back too?). Or can you just save the PPS file from the e-mail program...

Once it saves the file to your computer, find it and double click it and see what happens. (this is to see if the problem is with your e-mail program or your computer). Let me know what happens...

What might have happen is that you got a trial version of PowerPoint, if that's the case, it will need to be un-installed... we'll see.

Ah, ha, right clicked, "saved as" in "My Documents" folder, then double clicked it there and it worked. I knew someone on TBN would know how to make it work. Sorry to be so much trouble and Thank You!

No problem ...But that just means that your e-mail program is not setup just right... You should be able to open those files right from your e-mail program. You can PM if you want to try and fix it (or we can do it out in the open, here:eek:)

That is... If Soundguy doesn't care if I've highjacked his thread :eek:

What e-mail program are you using?

I was afraid you were going to say that... Your "mail" could be a couple of things... One, is that you go to a website to "pick up" your mail? (something like webmail, Hotmail or Gmail) Or two, there's a button on Internet Explorer that will call up (and run) another program like, Outlook (which I know very little about)... I'm not sure if I'll be able to help but... of the 2 that I said, does either sound correct? (and technically, both can be correct but lets Keep It Simple :))

/ power point viewer #28
I don't know what I was thinking . . . I'm using Internet Explorer for a browser and Outlook Express for e-mail. And I don't use any of those other places to pick up my e-mail; just my ISP which is centurytel.net.

/ power point viewer #29
Yea, I don't know much about Outlook Express (and would like to keep it that way :p). One thing you might try (it's a long shot) when you are in your e-mail program and you do a right mouse click on the PPS file to "Save As.."; look for another choise that reads "Open with..." Funny how they are both MS products, you'll think they would work together.:(

As for not using those "other" programs, you could... when you are out of town, you can still check your home e-mail at this website (top left, click on "Check E-mail" and enter your user/password):

CenturyTel Portal

(you can try it at home too... it will look different but if you are away and need to check e-mail, it works).

Dan, I remember seeing that "Open with . . ." somewhere in the past, but I don't have that when I right click an attachment in my e-mail.

And that CenturyTel Portal is my home page, so I'm familiar with that.:D

And while I know I can check my home e-mail when I'm away from home, so far I've never seen any need to do that; maybe someday.:)

I'm thinking pretty seriously about buying a new computer in the near future and my wife thinks I should buy a laptop instead of desktop. Personally, I'm not so sure, and I certainly know nothing about this wireless business.:D

I use OE, and if configured correctly it will let you open and run attachments from the email. He may not have a temp folder setup.. or he may have disallowed certain options .. like not downloading pics or running html.. there might be an option for safely handling attached files.. etc.

Oh, well, I may not have to worry about it after this weekend. I just got back from Best Buy where I let a nice young fellow talk me into buying a complete new computer system; i.e., desktop, monitor, and printer. Sure hope it doesn't take me too long to get it set up and running, transfer data, and learn to use Vista instead of XP.

/ power point viewer #33
I would pay extra NOT to get Vista, IMHO. My mother's computer has it and it drove me nuts... makes a fast computer run SLOW.

I have no idea whether I'll like Vista or not, but since that's what comes on the new computers and since I wonder how long Microsoft will support XP, and since this old Dell is doing some funny things I don't like . . . well, we'll see. I've been dreading trying to get a new one set up.

I just read an article this morning that mentions that if you own a Vista license, you are entitled to downgrade to XP, W2000 and even back to W98. So, if you don't like it, you can wipe it and install your XP on it. Or you could install XP next to Vista as a dual-boot system and pick which operating system you want to run at boot up. That would be a good way to get used to Vista and still be able to run XP if you need something that you are not familiar with in Vista. Anyhow, you have to have all the drivers for XP before that will work.

David, of course, I first got Windows XP from Dell, but had so many problems with it that I actually bought my own XP, had a new hard drive installed, and XP installed then a few years ago. Of course, there have been many, many updates since then. And recently this old Dell has been doing a few things that don't make sense to me, and of course, I can work around them, but . . . little things like when I open a new window it used to open maximized, but quit doing that sometime in the last week. Now it opens a small window and of course one click will maximize it. And I was accustomed to opening folders by double clicking. A couple of days ago that no longer worked. If I right click, the top option is "search" and that's what opens when you double click. So I can right click, then click on the second option to "open" a folder. Again, not a hard work around and someone who knows what he's doing could probably fix it. The cooling fans still work but are getting a big noisy. I use an adapter that goes into the floppy drive (does anyone else still have one of those?) to move photos from the camera to the computer. The printer sometimes makes a loud clang when it starts. In other words, it's about six and a half years old and has seen better days.

So, will I regret what I bought today? I don't know. But I bought a Hewlett-Packard a6330f computer, 19" flat panel monitor, and a Photosmart C4200 All-in-One printer. And tomorrow I'll start trying to get it set up, hooked up, etc.

So if you don't hear from me again, you'll know I failed.:D

Bird, you will not regret it. You probably put the hurt on that thing a long time ago with your prolific posting. :)

Did the article say how you go about getting a legal copy of XP to install? Most people I know simply blow away Vista and install a cracked version of XP (one that does not force you to register) or linux.

Do you have the 98 Second Edition?

"...Supported Operating Systems: Windows 2000 Service Pack 3; Windows 98 Second Edition; bla,bla,bla..."

Download details: PowerPoint Viewer 2003

Might be worth a shot...

I've got straight Windows 98 with my Pentium Processor at home... before that I used my Apple IIe

I did try the PowerPoint Viewer 2003 and had to uninstall it... I got the dreaded Blue Screen and Safe Mode Start Up.

At work, we use a lot of windows 2000 very successfully with a few XP's

No one seems to like Vista here and we have not installed it.

This new computer with Windows Vista Home Premium came with the Microsoft Power Point Viewer already installed, but so far I haven't had a chance to see if it works (no e-mails with .pps attachments yet).
