The ethylhexyl nitrate is to boost the cetane levels of the poor quality North American diesel fuel a couple of cetane points. Adding more (doubling or tripling the dose of PS has ZERO effect on the cetane boost, since 1-2% EHN concentration or other aryl nitrate additives are only good for a couple of cetane units due to their free radical electron transfer mechanism becoming maxxed out at those concentrations). Plus the high levels of aromatic low cetane ring compounds in North American diesel fuels limits the benefits of cetane enhancers.
European diesel #2 has almost no aromatic ring compounds and is very sensitive to EHN boost due to all the paraffins, but North American diesel #2 is not that highly refined and here diesel #2 is more of a waste product of gasoline production than it is a primary distillate like it is in Europe with their straight cut distillation.
Aromatic hydrocarbons have little to no cetane value. Here in North America they comprise 25%-45% of the diesel #2 chemical composition. They are basically gasoline components and end up in our diesel fuel due to poor refining methodologies for middle distillates. The reverse is true in Europe, where diesel fuel is a primary fuel in refineries and it contains less than %5 aromatic ring compounds of low cetane value....
The esterified fatty acids in PS are to add some extra lubricity to keep the pump internals and the injectors from wearing too fast.
The white bottle also has a bactericide and algicide added to keep microorganisms growth limited. Also, a pour point depressant is added for winter use at lower temperatures to prevent the molucular lattice formation which results in waxing.
I have all the chemisty data at home on CD-ROM from the SAE.
If you want to get their proprietary formulation, join the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and purchase their Diesel Fuel and Diesel Fuel Additive CD-ROMs containg the peer reviewed publications from the entire American petrochemical industry and all their suppliers.
Sound - the MSDS won't be much good to you unless you are an orgainc chemist, since you will not understand what it is or what it is for. But at least your guess is correct, there is more than one chemical in PS!
By the way, since PS contains diesel #2, it has a minimum of 500 different hydrocarbon chemicals in it! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
