For those of you who have a power shuttle, I am preaching to the choir. As some of you may know, my PS did not work (used TN 70A, problems with Texas dealer fixing it). I took the PS to an NH AG dealer in WI and by simply reconnecting a switch, the PS worked as designed. When I got the tractor home, I sort of wondered if I would ever use the PS. The clutch was so easy to use, I thought, what is the big deal with a PS? Now I know.

After 5 hours of "learning" the PS makes me look like a star. I was spreading 3/4 inch traffic bond on my driveway. Drove within inches of the house. Engine rpm 1000, 1st gear, just creeping while back dragging with the FEL in float. Pull the PS lever back into neutral, tractor stops, then just slip it into reverse and at 1000 rpm, gently go backwards. Did this for 2 hours, 1000 rpm, 1st gear, back and forth, smooth as butter, over and over again. WOW! Double WOW!!

I can never give up my PS. Benefits like being able to run at 1000 rpm to do this light work. Low noise and low fuel consumption. No need for any clutch use.

So, for all of you who own and use a PS, I now understand. If you have never used a PS, find a friend who will let you use one for a few hours.

Amen! Great for many tasks.

I like the hydro trans on my TC 45 D but I don't like the whinning, power loss, stalling, and trying to use the loader while sharing the lift capacity with the transmission. Ten minutes on the 55 with EHSS and I knew the garage would contain one soon. Less than a week one was being " built for me " through a dealer order. It is on its way to the dealer and should be here after the add ons next week. My wife must think I'm in a mid life crisis buying two tractors in one year. Sign me up for the old cars but I prefer the new technology 4x4 tractors. Life is too short to go without. Besides it is cheaper than therapy.

I looked at the 55 since the 48 did not have the option of an EHSS (if memory serves me right). You picked up on the EHSS must faster than I did. Took me hours to appreciate it, not 10 minutes. I love being at idle, then 1000 rpm, then 1100 rpm, being able to adjust the power instantly for waht the situation needs. I don't like being at 2400 rpm or 2000 rpm just to move. The EHSS/PS lets me control the machine based upon what I am doing, not the tranny dictating engine speed.

I couldn’t agree more, I really like my PS. I also like to run mine at a lower RPM without the noise. A PowerShuttle really makes it smooth going from forward to reverse. There is just one other standard transmission that I would rather have and it wasn’t available with I bought the tractor that I have now.

You said it all... comes all down to power, noise, fuel consumption and engine wear. The PS is awesome in the winter clearing snow.

One question tho: Without the PS, how could you lets say back up with your TN70? Does it have a reverse gear? I would have to go in that direction the PS is stuck in. LOL

Took me a while, also about 5 hrs or so, to get used to the PS.

I look forward to the snow this year. One thing I leanred with the PS was to simply pull it into neutral, let the tractor stop moving and then push it into forward or pull into reverse. smooooooth. The PS does all the clutch work so effortlessly. Then, bring up the rpm (if needed) and go back to work.

I am going to have to go out today if time permits and practice like I am snow blowing. Engine at 2200 rpm, 1st gear, going forward, pull into neutral, then let tractor come to a complete stop, then pull into reverse. I want to see how it does at 2200 rpm with this technique.

"I want to see how it does at 2200 rpm with this technique"

I started out using my PS @ 2200rpm when hogging and experienced some jerking after appx. 20-30 hours. The dealer came out and made an adjustment so it became smoother transition, however, he also told me that it would be better if I ran at 1500 rpm when shuttling and then use the foot pedal to increase the rpm's once direction was changed.

Okay, that is in sync with my dealer service who said the same thing, 1500 rpm. IS the shuttling only an issue when engaging? Any problems with disengaging at 2200 rpm? Or just engaging?

You can judge how much strain the clutch packs and drive train will be subjected to when you reverse. If you're going real fast or pulling something real heavy, throttle down until you've got less load on the clutches. Also, I'm not so sure about using the shuttle as a clutch, like starting from stop by moving the PS into forward or reverse. My manual doesn't say anything about not doing that or doing it. Sometimes I've done it by mistake, missing getting the lever moved all the way, and it does seem to function as a clutch that way. Not sure about the long term using the shuttle that way, though. Besides, the clutch pedal is such a habit...
