I have a Yanmar YM276D that is equipped with manual stearing. Is it posible to change this over to power?

There are many 'universal' retrofit power steering kits onthe internet.. the most common are the ones with the cyl and valve as a single assembly, and your old draglink rod is used to actuate the valve in the cyl assembly..etc.

I've done this. Not very hard at all, but expensive.

My YM2220D/FEL is fairly hard steering with a full bucket which leads me to look kindly on the idea of retrofitting power steering. Your mention of universal kits peaked my interest, but so far my Googling hasn't turned up anything.

Could you (or anyone reading this) point me in the proper direction(s)? Thanks.

Before you do anything you need to check the king pin bearings. That was why mine steered hard with the bucket full. Put the power steering on and worked great until they finally froze up and broke the mount for the steering cylinder. I got my Yanmar kit from Tullohoma Tractors made specifically for Yanmar tractors.

Thanks, Eugene. I'll check out Tullahoma Tractors to get an idea of whether I think it's worth the cost.

I don't believe there's any mechanical problem, the only time I have any difficulty is stopped or very slow speeds in close quarters. I'm looking at it more as a case of operator laziness than any actual problem.

When my loader bucket is full, I have found for some reason that I can steer easier in reverse. Has anyone else experienced this? The directional thread on my tires is going in the right direction.

If I had to venture a guess, I'd say it had to do with the steering geometry. I've drawn a total blank on the technical term, but usually the axis of rotation is tilted so that, extended, it intersects the ground ahead of the contact point of the tire. That way, rolling forward, the wheel tends to trail (Ah, yes - CASTER Angle) so that the steering is stable.

In reverse, because of the caster angle, the steering is normally unstable. The front wheels, once turned slightly away from dead ahead, tend to turn to a tighter and tighter turn radius. This would reduce the force on the steering wheel needed to make the turn when moving in reverse.

Does anyone know if Yanmar equiped the 276Ds with power stearing? and if so would it be posible to retro fit mine with a stearing unit from one of them?

A character here named Nomad had something to do with a factory that made aftermarket PS units. Search here for him.. from what he said.. his company makes and sells just about all retrofit ps units to every tractor in the known universe.. plus to many tractor owners in unknown parts of the universe.

Ok.. so that is a little exagerated.. but once you contact him.. you will know what I mean.

He posted some links or pics in some thread.. not sure of the forum.

I will say one thing though, one of the example pics did have a nice sturdy looking ford 5000 in it that I was quite fond of...

Probably the easiest thing to do is lookup his public profile, and then view his messages.. starting oldest and going back till you hit a PS subject..

Right Chris, all you have to do is wire him $550 to Turkey.

Thanks Chris. I've been lurking around here for awhile so I think I know what you mean - And that is/was a nice looking Ford.

I'd rather stay a little closer to home than Turkey -especially since I'm not yet entirely convinced I want to do this. It's more a convenience thing than any real problem.

I've emailed Hoye Tractor and they indicated an awareness of retrofit kits but do not carry them. Have also contacted Tullahoma Tractors but still too soon to expect a response from them.

At one time Len Shaffer had a retrofit kit that he priced to me for $750. Not sure he's on here anymore but is on Yahoo's Yanmar site. I have emailed him but don't have a response yet.

That kit that is coming from turkey is being sold at 'state side' dealers. I've seen plenty of those around.. so someone over here is selling them as I don't think every one i see was bought direct from turkey.. etc. (grin).

Thanks, Soundguy. I appreciate the effort. I'm impressed by the folks on this forum. They really go the extra mile. Not like some of the (unmoderated) Usenet forums (fora) I visit. There, it seems like a large segment of the populace are more interested in mounting verbal assaults than offering any real assistance.

Again, thanks! The power steering issue in one I'll most likely drop. The money will be better spent on something that more directly helps to get the job done than simply kow-towing to operator (me) laziness.
