power trac 425
Does anyone have any ideas what it costs to run the different Power Tracs on an hourly rate? Using the 425 as an example and an engine life of 2000 hours with fuel, oil changes, depreciation and all of the other hidden costs. Any ideas? Thanks

46 mac,

When computing the operating costs for the PT-425, it may be more reasonable to use an engine life factor of at least 3,000 hours with the current generation Robin Subaru engines. The following appeared in this Forum sometime this Summer:

( According to the EPA regulations we are requried to stand behind 3000 operating hrs. on the engine, but that doesn't mean that the engine will fail after this time. I was discussing severe wear of parts with a customer in Alabama that had our engine on another hydraulic application tractor. With over 6400 hrs. within a year and a half, he called me demanding warranty on the wear of rings and some other parts, I've declined it, telling him that he's definately is getting his money's worth. Of course, after computing those costs, one would have to adjust the cost downward by applying the appropriate "PTFF" discount (that would be the PT Fun Factor discount, of course). In my case, it's up there pretty high, as I am sure it is with other PT owners, too.

Good question...

My 28 year old Power King, which has a 14 HP Kohler engine, is all original, and shows no old or tired engine symptoms such as blue smoke exhaust, power loss, or hard starting! I have always used synthetic oil, currently Amsoil.

This may explain why Jack says of synthetic oil that "it's a big waste of money"! He may prefer that owners 'waste' that money, and more, on a new Robin engine after only a year and a half!! I prefer to 'waste' a little money now, rather than a lot of money later!!
Interesting to learn that sometimes a Robin 2 year warranty isn't any good after only a year and a half!! Perhaps you could get a 10 year warranty, if you promise not to use the engine for the first 10 years!!
